7th House: Partnerships
A marriage, a business partnership, a contract signed before a witness: in a chart, these commitments run through the seventh house, which describes what a person looks for in another and what they are willing to negotiate.
It begins at the Descendant, the degree of the zodiac setting in the west at the moment of birth, directly opposite the Ascendant. The first house shows how you move forward alone. The seventh shows what changes when someone stands across from you, as an equal. It is often reduced to romantic partnership, whereas it covers any bond in which each party has given their word, including with a declared rival. It is an angular house, associated with Libra and Venus.
What the 7th House governs
Everything starts from the Descendant. This point is calculated from the time and place of birth, like the Ascendant of which it is the exact mirror, and it changes sign roughly every two hours on average. Two people born on the same day three hours apart therefore do not necessarily have the same one. In the most common house systems, Placidus or Koch for example, the Descendant marks the cusp of the 7th house: without a reliable birth time, this house is hard to read.
Its domain is the other person you commit to. A spouse, of course, but also the partner you start a business with, the person you sign a lease with, the client on an important contract. Old texts also place declared adversaries here, those you confront openly in a lawsuit or a tough negotiation, as well as certain advisers bound by contract, such as a lawyer. What they have in common fits in a few words: a clearly identified, one-to-one relationship in which something has been promised or signed. Friendships belong to the 11th house, family to the 4th; flirting and casual romance to the 5th.
With the 1st, 4th and 10th houses, the seventh is one of the four angular houses, those that touch the axes of the chart and where things get decided. Here, the decision is always made by two. The Ascendant pushes a person forward; the Descendant stops them in front of someone with expectations of their own. The two houses form an axis: on one side what you assert about yourself, on the other what you expect from the person across from you.
The 7th House by sign and by the planets in it
The sign on the Descendant is always the opposite of the rising sign. Someone with an Aries Ascendant, quick to charge ahead alone, therefore has a Libra Descendant: they are often drawn to diplomatic partners who take time to weigh things up. A Capricorn Ascendant, rather reserved, gives a Cancer Descendant, and the need to find in the other a warmth you rarely show yourself. Many astrologers read this sign as the qualities a person seeks, or attributes to their partners before recognizing them in themselves.
The element of the Descendant gives a first idea of the style. In Fire, bonds start quickly and openly, with partners who do not beat around the bush. In Earth, trust is built on proof, one commitment kept after another. Air looks for a real conversation partner in a couple or a business partnership, someone to talk things through with. Water brings more emotion into play, and emotional security weighs as much as the signed agreement.
In the natural zodiac, which pairs the first house with Aries, the second with Taurus and so on, the seventh goes to Libra, ruled by Venus. Hence the tone this house keeps, whatever sign actually sits on its Descendant: the search for balance, for reciprocity, for a fair measure between what each person brings.
Planets found here speak directly of partners and of how you commit. Venus in the 7th house seeks harmony and puts care into it, sometimes to the point of avoiding sore subjects. Saturn makes for caution: you commit late or seriously, sometimes with an older or more mature partner. Mars brings energy to the bond, and also friction with the person across from you. Jupiter is traditionally favorable to partnerships, with partners who are generous or open doors. The planet’s sign, its aspects and the placement of the ruler of the Descendant always refine these tendencies. This ruler matters even when the house is empty: placed in the 10th house, for example, it often links partners to professional life.
The gifts of a well-integrated 7th House
When this house is lived well, the person knows how to make room for someone without disappearing. Two wills coexist, each with its own tastes and limits, and a disagreement is not felt as a threat. A contrary opinion even becomes useful information: you listen to it, adjust, keep what holds up. In a couple or in a two-person business, this is often what makes the bond last beyond the first serious argument. This talent also shows in mediators, agents, all those whose job is to represent someone or to bring together two parties who are no longer speaking.
They also know how to negotiate. Finding the point where everyone leaves with something, without giving everything up or imposing everything, comes fairly easily to them. With experience, they choose their partners better and read contracts before signing, literally and figuratively: they know what they expect from a commitment before taking it on, and they dare to say so from the outset. That clarity spares them many misunderstandings, as well as partnerships struck on a whim that collapse at the first review.
The challenges of a 7th House under strain
The first pitfall is defining yourself through the relationship. Some people expect their partner or business associate to give them the identity the 1st house should provide. On their own, they no longer quite know who they are, and the partner carries a weight that is not theirs. A breakup or the end of a partnership then becomes a loss of bearings far wider than the loss of the bond itself, and the temptation to replace the person who left right away is strong.
At the other extreme, the habit of compromise can go too far. After rounding off so many corners, you no longer know what you wanted in the first place, and agreements always tilt the same way.
It also happens that you attribute to the other what you do not recognize in yourself. A person who allows themselves no anger finds themselves, partner after partner, facing hot-tempered people. Astrologers in the psychological tradition see this as a classic effect of the Descendant: its qualities are first encountered in other people.
When the commitment no longer serves
Breaking an agreement comes at a high price for a deeply invested 7th house. Loyalty to one’s word can keep an unbalanced partnership going long after it has stopped benefiting both sides, simply because a commitment was made. The decision is made in the end, but late.
Then there is the question of open conflict. Since this house also governs declared adversaries, a strained 7th house can multiply power struggles: lawsuits, negotiations that turn into confrontations, tugs-of-war with a business partner. Spotting what recurs from one conflict to the next often helps more than winning the next one.
For you and the people close to you
In your chart
Look at your longest-lasting commitments, at work and in love, and note what you gave up and what you held on to. This record says more about your 7th house than simply whether you are in a relationship or not. If you keep finding the same type of partner, ask yourself what part of yourself you are letting them carry.
In the chart of someone close to you
A prominent 7th house in someone close to you describes how they commit and what they expect from a partner, not the success or failure of their marriage. To read it accurately, keep an eye on their 1st house: the two houses face each other and explain each other. Someone very independent may experience every compromise as a real effort.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Descendant and the 7th house the same thing?
Almost. The Descendant is a precise point, the degree of the zodiac setting in the west at birth. In most house systems, it marks the start of the 7th house, which refers to the whole sector that follows, along with the planets in it.
Do you need planets in the 7th house to get married?
No. A 7th house with no planets prevents neither marriage nor partnership. The sign on the Descendant and the placement of its ruling planet are enough to describe how someone commits, and other parts of the chart, Venus first among them, also speak of love.
What does the 7th house say about business partnerships?
As much as about couples. Any two-person relationship formalized by an agreement belongs here: an associate, a business partner, a client bound by contract. The sign on the Descendant and the planets present describe the type of partner sought and the way decisions are shared.
Why are adversaries mentioned in the 7th house?
Tradition places open enemies here, those you confront openly, as opposed to hidden enemies, assigned to the 12th house. A lawsuit or a tense negotiation is still a one-to-one relationship, with an identified counterpart.
How do the 1st house and the 7th house relate to each other?
They face each other on the same axis, the Ascendant on one side, the Descendant on the other. The first describes self-assertion, the second the relationship with a partner. A chart heavily loaded on one side of the axis is often understood by looking at what happens on the other.
