Venus is the “evening star”, the brightest point in the sky after the Moon, visible in the evening after sunset or in the morning before dawn.
It bears the name of the Roman goddess of love, and astrology entrusts it with what that name suggests, but with a wider scope: what a person finds beautiful, desirable, worthy of attention, the way they become attached and what they expect from a bond. Venus also governs taste, the relationship with pleasure and money, the wish for harmony in a home and in a conversation. It rules Taurus and Libra. Since it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, it is found at most two signs away from it.
What Venus represents in a chart
Venus takes about 225 days to go around the Sun. Seen from Earth, it moves through the zodiac at a pace close to the Sun’s, spends a few weeks in each sign and goes retrograde about every nineteen months, for around forty days. These phases then keep it in the same sign for several months. It is also the planet that comes closest to Earth, which partly explains its brilliance.
It represents value first of all: what a person judges beautiful, good, worth choosing, in someone, in an object, a city, a way of spending Sunday. Then attachment, that is, the way of creating a bond, making it last, what makes it pleasant or painful. The sign of Venus colors these preferences. It is often what explains why two people who love each other have completely different ideas of a good evening.
The need for agreement
Venus seeks agreement almost by reflex. Faced with tension, it smooths things over, proposes a compromise, eases the atmosphere. Depending on the rest of the chart, this talent makes for excellent mediators or for people who can never say no.
Tradition pairs it with Mars. He goes out and seeks; she chooses what is worth seeking. Their respective placements shed light on love life and desire, but also on more prosaic things: a carefully decorated apartment, the way a budget is kept, the way friends are received for dinner.
Venus by element and modality, sign by sign
In Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Venus loves with momentum. It declares, it gets excited, it wants it to show. Attraction comes quickly, and so does boredom when the bond becomes too routine. In Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), it is won over by the mind: a conversation, a shared sense of humor, a way of seeing the world. Libra, its Air domicile, gives it a sense of balance and proportion.
In Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Venus wants something solid. A bond that lasts, gestures rather than promises, a comfort you can touch. Taurus, its other domicile, makes it the planet of sensual pleasures: good food, textures, music. In Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), attachment is lived intensely and away from prying eyes. Pisces is its exaltation, the sign where it loves in the broadest way, sometimes the least guarded.
Its two detriments, Aries and Scorpio, face its domiciles. They place it in signs that are more direct or more intense than its accommodating nature. Its fall, Virgo, makes it critical, attentive to detail, more at ease in service than in declarations. These placements flow less easily. They don’t love any less.
Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), Venus makes the first move. Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), it becomes attached for a long time and finds it hard to let go. Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), it loves variety, readily takes on the other person’s tastes, and can give the impression of not knowing what it prefers.
The gifts of a well-integrated Venus
Enjoying a coffee on a terrace, the light at the end of the day, a successful meal, without waiting for everything to be perfect: Venus, when it is well lived, gives exactly this talent.
It also knows what it likes, and grants it to itself without guilt. Pleasure doesn’t seem suspect to it. It doesn’t need to have earned it. An evening with no particular purpose, a garment chosen for its fabric, an hour spent wandering: it knows these moments matter.
In company, it puts people at ease. A word to lighten a meeting that is bogging down, a thoughtful gesture for the guest who knows no one: its diplomacy brings people together instead of dividing them.
This talent is not calculated. It comes from a sensitivity to what unites people, and those close to such a person perceive it as a pleasant presence, someone who makes room for the other without disappearing in the process.
Its aesthetic sense goes far beyond decoration. It guides the choice of a career, a neighborhood, a partner, and leads one to prefer what matters over what is simply available.
The challenges of a Venus under strain
Knowing what you like is far from obvious when you grew up adapting your tastes to other people’s. A Venus that wasn’t allowed to choose ends up desiring what pleases those around it, and takes years to untangle its own preferences, often by trial and error. Choices made to please, a career, a style, sometimes a spouse, end up weighing on a person without their being able to say why.
Clinging or holding back
When poorly lived, it swings between two extremes. Dependence, where self-esteem is measured by the other person’s approval and where one stays in a bond that no longer fits for fear of emptiness. Or reserve, a distance kept so as never to risk disappointment, which protects and isolates at the same time.
Its taste for harmony comes at a price. By avoiding disagreement, some people keep quiet about one need, then another, until the day everything comes out at once, over a tiny trigger, and those around them are stunned. Mars, in the same chart, often shows how this accumulated anger ends up being expressed.
For you and the people close to you
In your chart
What do you enjoy when nobody is watching? Your Venus answers that question better than the one about your soulmate. It speaks of your values and attachments in every area, friendship, money and surroundings included, and helps you tell a chosen pleasure from a comfort that is just for show.
In the chart of someone close to you
Giving a gift that hits the mark, choosing an outing, understanding a couple’s argument: the other person’s Venus sheds light on all of this. It says what the person values, which may be very different from what you value yourself. This gap explains many romantic misunderstandings.

Frequently asked questions
Beyond love, what does Venus cover?
It covers what a person appreciates and the way they form bonds, in friendship and in family, as well as taste, money and pleasure. Romantic love is part of it, without being all of it. Astrologers also consult it on social life, creativity or ways of spending.
Why is Venus never far from the Sun in a chart?
Its orbit lies inside Earth’s. Seen from here, it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. It is therefore in the same sign as the Sun, or at most two signs away.
What happens when Venus goes retrograde?
About every nineteen months, Venus seems to move backward in the sky for around forty days. Astrology sees this as a good time to review one’s attachments, spending or tastes, rather than to commit. In a birth chart, a retrograde Venus often describes affection experienced in a more inward way.
Does Venus in Virgo love less well?
Virgo is Venus’s fall, which describes a less demonstrative affection, expressed through attention, care and service. Love is just as present there; it comes through gestures more than declarations.
How do Venus and Mars respond to each other in a couple?
Astrologers often compare one person’s Venus with the other’s Mars to talk about attraction. When one person’s Mars matches what the other’s Venus finds desirable, attraction comes more easily. This guarantees nothing about how long it lasts, which depends on other factors, starting with the Moons.
