At the lowest point of the chart, opposite the Midheaven, the IC (Imum Coeli) opens the fourth house, the house of home and origins.

It does not put itself on display. What it describes happens behind closed doors: the atmosphere of the childhood home, what you received from your family without asking for it, the place where you have nothing to prove. It is often limited to the parents. It also speaks of roots in the broad sense, of the land or culture you come from, and of how a person builds a home of their own as an adult. Angular like the 1st house, it acts with just as much force, but inward, and what it carries remains invisible to others for a long time.

What the 4th House governs

The IC is one of the four angles of the chart, along with the Ascendant, the Descendant and the Midheaven. It too depends on the time of birth: a few minutes’ difference moves it by several degrees, and sometimes from one sign to the next. It faces the Midheaven. One looks toward public life, reputation, career; the other toward what remains once the audience has left and you take your shoes off in the hallway. Like all angular houses, the fourth was considered powerful in traditional astrology, and the planets found there carry great weight in a reading.

The house covers home in all its forms. Housing, of course, but above all the inner climate: the family of origin, the place of the parents, what you learned in your childhood home about security, tenderness, how to argue and make up. That climate, warm, tense or changing over the years, leaves a lasting mark. A person may have left their home region thirty years ago and still, on opening a door, recognize the exact smell of a kitchen. Tradition also places land and real estate here, everything that physically anchors someone somewhere.

Roots and endings

Two more subjects belong here. The first comes from modern astrology: the convictions you take for granted without having chosen them, the feeling of belonging to a place or a group, or on the contrary of never quite fitting in. The second is traditional. The 4th house describes the end of things, the conclusion of a matter, and by extension the last part of life. Beginning and end thus meet in the most hidden sector of the chart, the sector of roots, where everything starts and to which everything returns.

The 4th House by sign and by the planets in it

The sign on the IC colors what a person looks for at home. A Fire sign brings movement: a lively household, full of plans, sometimes noisy, where people gather more to do things together than to rest.

An Earth sign wants something solid. Reliable walls, a budget kept in check, a place you own if possible, and habits that do not change without good reason. An Air sign makes the home an open place, with conversations that run late, visitors, books on every table.

With a Water sign, we are back on this house’s home ground. Sensitivity to the family climate is strong, the memory of atmospheres long, and the need for an emotional refuge comes before material comfort. An argument in the kitchen can spoil a whole week.

Cancer and the Moon

The natural zodiac pairs the fourth house with Cancer, the fourth sign, and with the Moon, which rules it. Cancer protects, nourishes, keeps memory. The Moon describes the need for security and the oldest reactions, the ones that come before thought. This sector keeps that flavor of refuge, even when an outward-looking sign occupies its cusp.

Planets in the 4th house speak of the home you came from and the one you build afterward. The Moon here strengthens the need for roots and a nostalgia that returns in waves. Saturn can point to a childhood marked by strictness, absence or early responsibilities, and to a long effort to build a safer place later on. Venus makes the home welcoming and well kept. Uranus suggests instead moves, an unstable or unconventional household. The rest of the chart tells which of these stories dominates.

The gifts of a well-integrated 4th House

When this sector is at peace, the person has a refuge within. They know how to withdraw when the world gets too loud, recharge, then come back. Their security does not depend entirely on other people’s approval, which lets them commit elsewhere with more freedom, at work and in love. They can take risks out in the world because they know where home is.

They have sorted through their family heritage. They keep what nourishes them, a recipe, a way of welcoming people, a way of keeping one’s word, and let the rest go without excessive resentment. Their family history becomes a resource they draw on. They no longer drag it around like a weight, and they can talk about it without their voice tightening.

They also know how to make a home for others. At their place, people feel they were expected. Children, a partner, friends passing through find there the stability they have learned to cultivate, and this gift often shows best in times of crisis. When everything is shifting elsewhere, their home stays a fixed point, and their table an address where you can ring the bell unannounced.

The challenges of a 4th House under strain

Family patterns repeat quietly. A way of going silent during arguments, an anxiety about money, a distrust of outsiders: people reproduce them for years before noticing, often on the day an event brings them back to the surface. The first step is to see them.

Attachment to the past can also hold you back. Some people cannot leave the town they grew up in, compare every home to their parents’, live in the memory of a bygone time. Others do the opposite and cut every root, at the risk of finding themselves with nothing to lean on the day they need it.

The axis linking the 4th house to the 10th creates its own tension. Giving everything to a career sometimes leaves a void that is hard to name, despite success. Staking everything on private life can keep you from taking your place in the world, out of fear of leaving what feels safe.

When other parts of the chart call for visibility, a Sun in Leo or a busy Midheaven for example, the person feels torn between staying and leaving, protecting themselves and stepping into view. This conflict does not have to be settled once and for all. It often resolves in phases, with years turned outward and others turned toward home. Many people move back and forth like this between a phase of ambition and a nesting phase, and do well as soon as they stop seeing it as a contradiction.

For you and the people close to you

In your chart

What makes you say “I’m home” describes your 4th house far better than the decor of your living room. A place, a smell, a person, a Sunday-morning habit. Take care of this foundation without guilt: it is what lets you go far without losing yourself, and come back without feeling you are going backward.

In the chart of someone close to you

Avoid judging too quickly a loved one’s attachment to their family, or the distance they keep from it. Both often reflect a story you do not know in full. Their 4th house bears its trace. Leave it to them to talk about it when they wish, and receive what they tell you without trying to fix it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the IC mark the start of the 4th house?

In most house systems, yes: the IC is the cusp of the 4th house. With Equal houses, however, it can fall in the third or the fifth. The house then covers the whole sector that follows its cusp, along with any planets in it.

Which parent corresponds to the 4th house?

Traditions differ. Ancient astrology saw the father here, many modern astrologers read the mother or the parent most present at home, and the 10th house then takes the other. It can also be read as the family climate as a whole.

Should you look at the 4th house before moving?

In traditional astrology it is the sector of housing, land and real estate, so that is where you look for these subjects. A chart can shed light on a period. It does not replace a reasoned decision.

What does the Moon in the 4th house mean?

The Moon is the natural ruler of this sector, through Cancer. Placed here, it accentuates the need for emotional security, attachment to home and family, sometimes nostalgia. Its sign and aspects show whether that need is met or anxious.

What does the 4th house have to do with the end of life?

As the lowest point of the chart, it represents the root, and therefore the end of a cycle as much as its origin. Tradition read in it the conclusion of matters and the last part of life. This reading remains symbolic and predicts no date.
