The Throat, through which what is lived goes out toward others, has only one gate here, and it is a gate that holds back. The story waits until the experience has settled, while a need, for its part, presses to be named.
A single way out
Among the four gates, the 33 is the only one in the Throat, the center where experience becomes words or visible action. It is not a hurried gate: its delay depends on the experience itself, not on the audience.
The Earth falls in Gate 19, Wanting, in the Root, so that the pressure of a need counterbalances this restraint. Human Design describes this Right Angle as a personal destiny.
The bookstore that closed
Sixtine closed her neighborhood bookstore after four years. To those who asked, she answered “it was time” and changed the subject. She had nothing to hide; the story did not exist yet.
A year later, a journalist from the community radio station offers her an interview about bookstores that close. Sixtine declines, politely: she would not know what to say yet. That same evening, however, she writes to her former bank to get the statements for her four years, month by month.
The statements arrive. She reads them on a bench, between errands, circling the months without a salary. The story is still not ready; now it has its figures.
A story that arrives in its own time
When the story comes, it is calm and complete, rid of what is nobody else’s business. On the Design side, Gate 44, Alertness, can recognize in someone else a situation already gone through, which the story, when the time comes, will help shed light on.
With Gate 19, Wanting, at the Earth, the experience receives a concrete object: what was missing, named plainly, becomes a request someone close can meet.
When the people around speak in their place
Pressed with questions the day after a failure, the person delivers a raw version, which the 24 has not yet turned over; yet that is the one the people around them remember. With an open Throat, they also take on the rhythm of those questioning them.
The Root, for its part, pushes the person to make demands. A need can be demanded out loud while the experience that explains it stays unspoken: the people close by hear a demand without a story and take it for a whim.
For you, for others
For you
As long as an experience is still raw, a couple of words are enough for those who ask how you are, and the story can wait until it is ready, however insistent the questions.
For others
The day after a hard blow, with someone close who has this cross, one question is enough; then wait. If they suddenly demand something insistently, there may be a story behind it they have not yet told.
Frequently asked questions about the Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways
Does the story that is held back always come in the end?
It comes when the experience has settled. Silence can also set in out of habit, long after what was lived has ripened; the gate describes a delay, not an obligatory silence.
Does Gate 33 protect those who have confided in the person?
It can: what others have confided is not put into circulation. The same restraint applies to the person’s own experiences, which they let ripen before talking about them.
Does the restraint of the 33 depend on the Throat?
It depends on the experience, not on whether the center is defined. When defined, the Throat gives a steady way of speaking; it does not, for all that, hurry a story that is not ready.
Does the story change over time?
Yes. On the Design side, Gate 24 returns to the episode without any deliberate effort, and what the person ends up telling carries an understanding the facts alone did not give on the first day.
