A photographer returns from a harrowing assignment and says almost nothing about it to the people close to him. Months later, in the course of a conversation, the story finally comes out, calm and precise, as if it had been waiting until it was ready.
A gate of speech that holds back
Through the Throat, what a person lives goes out toward others, in words as well as in actions. This center can also delay the release, for reasons that change from one gate to another. Gate 12, Caution, holds on to its words while waiting to be given room.
Gate 33, Privacy, holds back something else: a whole experience, still too close to be told. Its delay does not depend on the audience. It comes from the experience itself, which the person lets settle before turning it into a story.
From the G Center, Gate 13, The Listener, answers it. Together the two gates form the Channel of the Prodigal, noted 13-33 in the chart: on the Throat side, Privacy receives new material there, the stories the Listener has gathered from others.
The story that comes later
Chloé, a night nurse, went through a shift in which a young patient died despite everything the team tried. The next day, when her mother asks how the week went, she says “tiring” and talks about something else. She is not hiding anything; she does not have the words yet.
A year later, her brother loses a friend in an accident. It is to him, that evening, that Chloé tells the story of that night on the ward: without dramatizing, with what can help him, without what is nobody’s business.
Words that have settled
Keeping things to yourself for as long as needed lets you tell a whole experience afterward, with clear outlines. Coming later, the Throat’s words are all the more accurate.
Privacy can also protect those who have spoken. What they confided is not put into circulation. The story that ends up being useful has shed along the way anything that would identify them.
With Gate 13, the story goes beyond the person’s own life: later on, it gives back to others stories gathered from them.
The story told too soon, or never
With an open Throat, Gate 33 appears in the chart with no channel to support it, and other people’s talk draws out the person’s own. Among friends swapping vacation stories, the person in turn shares an experience that is still raw, out before it has settled. According to the system, this open center amplifies the urge to speak circulating around it; the words come out unprocessed, and they later regret having said them in front of those people.
The same open Throat also picks up the pace of a hurried listener. When a manager demands an on-the-spot report on an intervention that went wrong, the answer follows the rhythm of the question, not that of the experience. The version that comes out that day is neither accurate nor complete. Yet it is the one people remember.
Finally, holding back can become a habit, long after the experience has finished maturing. An episode that settled years ago and has never been told deprives those close to the person of what mattered to them; in the long run, people stop asking.
For you, for others
For you
There is no rush: an experience that has not finished settling can wait. When people ask how you are, a short answer is enough; the story will come later, for someone it will help.
For others
A question asked too early about a significant event gets a brief answer: don’t take it as coldness. Come back to it later, without insisting, and let the person choose the moment for the story.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 33: Privacy
Are privacy and secrecy the same thing?
No. A secret hides something so that it is never known; the Privacy of Gate 33 holds back an experience until it is ready to be told. The story eventually comes, once the experience has matured.
What is left of Privacy without Gate 13?
Its own delay. Without the Listener, the channel is not formed and Gate 33 does not define the Throat; the person still lets what they themselves have lived through mature. What is missing are other people’s stories, which Gate 13 would have brought.
How long is an experience held back?
The system gives no duration. The delay is however long the experience needs to settle; it varies from one event to another.
Does Privacy prevent speaking in public?
The gate holds back a lived experience, not speech in general. A person with this gate can speak in front of a room while keeping for later what has just happened to them.
