A familiar idea comes back around, returns, shifts: the version that finally comes out has been put to the test on every return. A precedent recognized at once, at the Earth, serves as a safeguard during this slow work.

A thought that returns, a fixed fate

The name of the cross is also the name of Gate 24. None of its three centers, the Ajna, the Spleen Center and the G Center, is a motor: what drives action comes from elsewhere in the chart.

The Juxtaposition stands for fixed fate, a bridge between the Right Angle and the Left Angle.

The book club

In a neighborhood library, the book club has been meeting around Delphine for twelve years. In September, the director suggests adding readings aloud and waits for her answer to finalize the fall program.

Delphine says neither yes nor no. For a month, the idea changes shape from one session to the next: an extra evening, then a reading at the end of the meeting, finally ten minutes read aloud at the start of each session. When the shape holds, the program has already been printed, with two evenings handed to another association. The club tries its ten minutes anyway and keeps them.

Two speeds, one proposal

Gate 44, Alertness, placed at the Earth, links a new idea at once to what has already been tried, successes included.

Gate 24 then takes this idea up for weeks; the proposal that comes out has been compared with the past, then turned over until it holds.

Gate 7, Role of the Self, earns the person a following when the group recognizes them, and Gate 13, The Listener, makes them someone people confide in. A group then consults a person who heard it out before answering.

Too late for the deadline

Gate 24 has no deadline, and a 4/1 waits until they have checked their foundations before speaking. Together, these two slow paces can let the moment pass when an opinion would have counted; the person then blames themselves for not saying anything in time.

The 44 can also stop the idea too early. A happy precedent, recognized immediately, makes the person want to do exactly the same thing again, before the 24 has finished with it.

The place of the 7 depends on the group’s recognition. Offered before anyone asks for it, a proposal ripened for weeks by the 24 falls as flat as any other.

For you, for others

For you

When a deadline arrives before the form, deliver what you have and announce what will follow. An interim version, presented as such, does not commit you to the final form.

For others

Ask a colleague with this cross your important questions several weeks before you need the answer; along the way, ask her how far along she is.

Frequently asked questions about the Juxtaposition Cross of Rationalization

Does Gate 24 push you to make excuses for yourself?

Not in the usual sense. Inventing reasons after the fact is not what the gate describes: it takes up an idea already known, and each pass changes it a little, until it reaches a new form.

Do instinct and reflection contradict each other?

They work at two speeds. The 44 instantly compares a lead with what has already been tried; the 24 then takes it up for weeks. When reflection contradicts the alert, going back to what was noticed first helps to decide.

Is the road proposed to the group always the person’s own?

Not when the G Center is open: direction there takes its cue from the people around them, and the person can in good faith point to the direction of whoever is most convinced. The 7 holds the place the group entrusts to it; it does not guarantee that the road comes from the person.

What does a group in a hurry gain by consulting this person?

A brake and a reference point. The 44 flags what has already failed; the 24 proposes, later, a better-considered form. A group able to wait a week gains both.
