What is a Kin in the Dreamspell?

The Kin is a number from 1 to 260 attached to each day, and therefore to each date of birth; the Dreamspell also calls it the galactic signature. On Soulencia, it is calculated with the Dreamspell, the system of José Argüelles, which dates from 1987. The Dreamspell rests on a 260-day cycle, the Tzolkin, but it does not count it the way the traditional Maya calendar does. The same date of birth therefore does not fall on the same day in the two systems, and this page never mixes their results.

A seal and a tone

Each Kin combines two elements. The first is a solar seal, one of 20: the Dragon, the Wind, the Night, the Seed, and so on up to the Sun. The seal describes a way of being: what the person moves toward of their own accord, what they give without thinking about it, and where they tend to lose their way. The second is a galactic tone, numbered from 1 to 13, from Magnetic to Cosmic. The tone does not change the nature of the seal. It changes the way the seal acts. An Eagle with tone 4 needs a clear structure before committing, while an Eagle with tone 9 sees quickly and must act quickly, before hesitation erases what it saw.

Why 260 Kin

Twenty seals, thirteen tones. The count moves forward by one seal and one tone each day, and it takes 260 days for the same pair to come back: these are the 260 Kin. Kin 1 brings together the first seal and the first tone, Kin 14 returns to tone 1 with the Wizard, Kin 21 returns to the Dragon with tone 8. Each seal also carries a color, red, white, blue or yellow, which comes back every four seals and completes the Kin’s name. Kin 1 is thus called Red Magnetic Dragon.

What the calculator gives, what the Kin page contains

The calculator on this page is free and asks for no email. It gives your Kin number, your seal and your tone, then your theme, your gift, your three strengths, your challenge, and the note and influence of your tone. Each of the 260 Kin then has its own page, which goes further. There you will also find your pitfalls, what happens when alignment is lost, a piece of advice and your oracle: the Analog that supports you, the Antipode that shakes you up and the Occult, the hidden power at work beneath the surface.

How your Kin is calculated

The starting point: January 19, 1986

The calculator starts from a reference date: January 19, 1986, which is a Kin 1 in the Dreamspell. For any other date, it counts the days between that date and the reference, forward or backward, then keeps only the position in the 260-day cycle. A gap of 33 days gives Kin 34. A gap of 260 days brings you back to Kin 1. The seal and the tone are then read directly from this number, since both move forward one step a day.

The February 29 rule

One rule carries a lot of weight: the Dreamspell does not count February 29. Every February 29 between January 19, 1986 and your date of birth is therefore taken out of the count. Without this removal, a birth in 2001 would be shifted by four Kin, one for each February 29 crossed since 1988. For a birth on February 29, the calculator gives the Kin of the neighboring day (see the dedicated question below).

  1. 28February Kin n
  2. 29February out of the count
    “0.0 Hunab Ku”
  3. 1March Kin n + 1

And the traditional Maya count?

The traditional Maya count works differently, with another correlation and without removing February 29. The two methods generally do not give the same Kin for the same date.

How we checked

We cross-checked the January 19, 1986 reference and the removal of February 29 against dates published by two independent Dreamspell sources. The Foundation for the Law of Time (lawoftime.org) states that the Dreamspell count is calibrated to July 26, 1987, “8 Wizard”: for that day the calculator does give Kin 34, tone 8, the Wizard seal. The site tortuga1320.com places a Kin 1 on June 23, 1987 and another on January 24, 1981, and the calculator finds Kin 1 on both dates. The second crosses February 29, 1984, which also checks the leap year rule.

The 20 seals, the 13 tones and the 260 Kin

Each seal and each tone has its own page, whether or not you already know your Kin. The seals describe the substance, the tones the manner. The list of the 260 Kin leads to each full Kin page, from the Red Magnetic Dragon (Kin 1) to the Yellow Cosmic Sun (Kin 260).

Frequently asked questions about the Dreamspell

Is the Dreamspell the same thing as a Maya horoscope?

No. The Kin comes from a single cycle, the 260-day Tzolkin, whereas traditional Maya astrology drew on several calendars at once. The Dreamspell keeps only this cycle, and Soulencia uses it for self-knowledge, not for prediction.

Why does the Dreamspell skip February 29?

The Dreamspell removes February 29 from the count of days, and in it that day is marked “0.0 Hunab Ku.” It is a rule of the system, not a calculator error. For a birth on February 29, the calculator gives the Kin of the neighboring day.

What is the difference between the Kin and the traditional Tzolkin?

How each one lines up with our calendar, and how it treats leap years. The traditional Tzolkin follows a different correlation with our calendar (the GMT correlation) and counts every day, February 29 included, whereas the Dreamspell keeps its own count, in which January 19, 1986 is a Kin 1, and removes February 29. Soulencia’s calculator follows the Dreamspell.

Can you calculate someone else’s Kin?

Yes: enter their date of birth in the calculator at the top of the page. Their Kin page then helps put words to what brings you together, and to what causes friction between you.

Do you need to know your time of birth to calculate your Kin?

No. The Kin depends only on the day: everyone born on the same day has the same Kin, whatever the time. The calculator therefore asks only for the date.

Does your Kin change over the course of your life?

No, your birth Kin stays the same your whole life. Every day of the calendar, except February 29, also has its own Kin, and the cycle comes back every 260 days: roughly every eight and a half months, a day carries your Kin again.

Why does another site give a different Kin?

It may follow the traditional Maya count instead of the Dreamspell, or it may not remove February 29. Either way, the difference comes from the method, not from your date. A simple test: a Dreamspell calculator should show Kin 1 for January 19, 1986.
