In the kitchen at a neighborhood dinner, twenty volunteers are waiting without knowing where to start. A neighbor with no title and no chef’s apron suggests two stations, then three; the group turns to her without having agreed to. The way she holds her place shows the others where to go.

A role turned toward the collective

The G Center brings together the sense of self and direction. Among its eight gates, Gate 2 holds a person’s own road; Gate 7 looks at a group’s. The system gives this gate the role of guiding a collective. That role doesn’t depend on whether the center is defined: an open G Center can fill it too.

The gate grants no title. It describes a place the group either entrusts or refuses, depending on whether it recognizes the person who has it.

Chosen before speaking

At her children’s basketball club, Stéphanie isn’t on any committee. Yet when the coach leaves, she is the one the parents ask how to organize the away trips. She answers with two suggestions, and the season goes on.

For Yanis, the role plays out in the family. He is the third of four children, but he is the one his siblings turn to when visits to their mother, who has moved into a care home, need to be shared out.

Neither Stéphanie nor Yanis went looking for this role. The group gave it to them; they fill it to the extent they are asked.

A direction the group can follow

A group that counts someone with Gate 7 among its members can find a direction without fighting over first place. That person imposes nothing: they suggest a road at the moment the group is looking for one.

The role doesn’t need a title. It lives just as well in a shared apartment as in a company, anywhere several people have to get somewhere together.

If Gate 31, Leading, joins the chart from the Throat, the 7-31, the Channel of the Alpha, fits the direction into one sentence the group remembers. The channel doesn’t turn the person into a boss; it gives a voice to the role they already held.

A role you give yourself

Gate 7’s role depends on the group’s recognition. Taken unasked by someone whose Strategy calls for waiting for an invitation or for a response from the Sacral, it runs into resistance.

For a Manifestor, launching a direction without being entrusted with it is still possible. If they launch it without a word, the group discovers the change of course after the fact, once the tasks have already been redistributed; what could have passed for a suggestion then looks like a power grab.

One day, the presidency of an association lands in front of a Generator with Gate 7, for lack of any other candidate. Accepted without a response from his Sacral, the role wears him down: he still guides, without the energy to keep it up, and frustration ends up spreading into the meetings.

Leading a group toward the direction of its most insistent member while believing you’re pointing out your own: with an open G Center, the role remains, but the sense of self tunes itself to the people around them.

For you, for others

For you

The groups that come to you when they no longer know where to go are the ones where your role counts. Elsewhere, your opinion counts like everyone else’s, and nothing requires you to defend it harder.

For others

When a colleague with this gate is guiding the group, acknowledging her role out loud helps her hold it: saying in front of everyone that you’re counting on her suggestion is worth more than agreeing on the side. Also leave her the right not to guide, some days.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 7: Role of the Self

How does someone decide when their chart combines the 7-31 and the 3-60?

Through their Sacral. The 3-60 defines the Sacral and the Root, the 7-31 the G Center and the Throat, with no path linking a motor to the Throat. As a Generator, the person waits for their gut’s response to decide. With the 7-31 alone, they would be a Projector; their decision would then go through the G Center.

Does Role of the Self mean you like giving orders?

No. The role consists of pointing out a direction to a group that is looking for one. Giving orders isn’t part of it; the group’s recognition carries more weight than the authority of a position.

How does Gate 7 differ from Gate 31?

Gate 7, in the G Center, carries the role of guide; Gate 31, in the Throat, carries the speech that leads. The first says what place to hold in the group, the second how to express it.

How many groups can recognize this role?

No number is set. Each group recognizes it or not on its own account: a person their team follows may have no say at all in their family.
