A vegetable garden planted in spring and tended through to the last squashes of October shows what this gate does: it sees something that has been started through to maturity. What keeps it going over time has nothing to do with willpower.
A strength that goes to the end of the cycle
A cycle opens, is carried through, then closes. Gate 42 holds the middle stretch. It sits in the Sacral, which starts nothing on command and waits for something to respond to; whatever the Sacral has responded to, Gate 42 helps grow until it has given what it had to give. Growth names this journey: what has been accepted develops as long as the gut keeps feeding it.
The first stage belongs to its partner, Gate 53, Beginnings, a gate of the Root that drives the opening of a cycle. Together they form 42-53, the Channel of Maturation: what one launches, the other carries through to its end.
To the last page
In the evening Japanese class, half the students had dropped out by the second year. Coralie is still there in the third, with no particular pride: each lesson still makes her want the next one.
Tristan is reading his son a seven-volume saga, one chapter a night. The last volume comes after two winters. He has never had to push himself: the story pulled him along from one evening to the next.
The same Tristan took an online course because a colleague kept insisting. Every module dragged; he finished them fueled by coffee, without anything growing.
In his case, the difference shows in his tiredness at night. After a day spent on what is growing, it is clean, and a night’s sleep clears it. After a day of modules he endured, it is still there when he wakes up.
What comes to maturity
What reaches maturity gives what something abandoned along the way cannot: complete knowledge, a finished piece of work, a relationship that has had time to become what it could be. Gate 42 lets a person get there, provided the gut accepted the start.
Others can count on this steadiness when it rests on a real response. With Gate 53, which opens cycles, Gate 42 finds what it needs to carry them from the first day to the last.
Growing without a response
A Generator with this gate can carry through a cycle their Sacral never accepted. Gate 42 supplies the steadiness, not the desire: the project moves forward, each step costs something, and frustration grows as the end approaches.
Expanding something beyond what the gut had accepted is another trap. A founder’s Sacral had said yes to a neighborhood association of twenty members; pushed on by congratulations, she turns it into a federation of ten branches that her gut never wanted.
With an open Sacral, Gate 42 has no reserve of its own to keep going. A Projector with this gate can carry a team project to the end on the momentum of the Generators around them; according to the system, nothing signals to them when it is enough, and the exhaustion comes after delivery.
For you, for others
For you
Go through the projects you are running today and ask yourself, for each one, whether it is still growing. The one your gut no longer supports can stop there.
For others
When a colleague has Gate 42, offer her the next thing once the current cycle is wrapped up: in the middle of it, a new offer competes with a commitment that still needs all her strength.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 42: Growth
Does the growth of Gate 42 have a limit?
The limit of the cycle. The gate carries something through to maturity, then the cycle closes; growing further calls for a new Sacral response.
Does the name Growth refer to personal development?
No: it refers to what the gate does to things already begun. Nothing starts with it: what the Sacral has accepted finds there what it needs to develop, step by step, until it yields what it holds.
Does Gate 42 make you want to start things?
Not directly. The drive to launch a cycle belongs to Gate 53, Beginnings, on the Root side; Gate 42 comes into play afterward, to make what the Sacral has accepted last.
Can you leave a cycle unfinished when you have Gate 42?
Yes. The steadiness of the gate follows the Sacral’s response. When that response dies out, stopping with a clear announcement costs less than finishing without it: a vegetable garden abandoned in August is no failing if the gut was no longer behind it.
