An attentive silence is sometimes enough for someone else to start talking about themselves. With some people, that silence draws stories they hadn’t asked for, from a relative or a colleague just passing through. Human Design links this disposition to the gate of The Listener.
Where The Listener sits
Gate 13 belongs to the G Center, the center of the sense of self, of the direction a life takes and of love in the broad sense.
Its only partner is Gate 33, Privacy, which belongs to the Throat, the place of speech and action. When both appear in the chart, they form the 13-33, the Channel of the Prodigal, which defines both of these centers. From then on, the chart can no longer be a Reflector’s, and its Authority can be neither Mental nor Lunar.
Without Gate 33, Gate 13 defines no center and so imposes neither Type nor Authority. It still remains in the chart. Its center can also be defined by another channel, such as the 2-14, which links it to the Sacral: Gate 13 then sits in a defined center, without a channel of its own.
What people come to tell them
The family meal has turned into an argument. While Inès dries the dishes, her brother comes to give her his version, then her sister hers, each certain she will understand. She hasn’t asked a single question.
With Paul, a site foreman, the workers drop by the site office with a scheduling question and stay to talk about a son who no longer comes home at night. Paul has never thought of himself as attentive; people talk to him anyway.
A place where anything can be said
The gate’s name says what it offers: a listening ear. With someone who has it, the other person can tell their story all the way through, without having to defend it at every sentence.
This role of confidant comes from the gate itself. The system is clear on this: whether the G Center is defined or open makes no difference.
When Gate 33 is there too, the channel adds a delay: what was confided only comes back out after a period of silence, in the form of an experience retold.
When listening takes up all the room
Listening doesn’t exempt you from your Type’s Strategy. A Generator who stays on the phone for two hours with a friend when their Sacral hasn’t responded at all comes away drained; frustration follows.
A Projector with this gate quickly forms an opinion about the story they’re being told. Giving it without having been invited puts them outside their Strategy: the confiding stops dead, and they are left with bitterness.
Inès has an open G Center. According to the system, an open center tunes its direction to the people around it; by taking in so many stories, she risks adopting the direction of whoever spoke last. She comes home from the meal determined to quit her job, like her brother; the next day, on the phone with her sister, the idea seems absurd to her.
For you, for others
For you
After a conversation where you mostly listened, sort out what belongs to you from what comes from the other person. What people confide in you doesn’t obligate you: you can receive it without solving it.
For others
Before a long story, ask the person with Gate 13 whether they have room to hear it right now. Ask how they are doing, too: listening can go both ways.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 13: The Listener
How does Gate 13 end up in a chart?
Through one of the calculation’s 26 activations, thirteen taken at birth and thirteen at the Design: one of them has to fall in its segment of the zodiac. The activation then lands on one of the gate’s six lines, which this page doesn’t go into.
Does Gate 13 make you discreet?
Not on its own. Privacy is the name of its partner, Gate 33, which belongs to the Throat. Gate 13 takes in the stories; keeping them is Gate 33’s business.
What Type does someone with The Listener have?
Any Type. The 13-33 alone makes a Projector; with the 6-59 added, the chart becomes that of a Generator with Emotional Authority, because the Sacral, defined this way, doesn’t connect to the Throat.
Do you decide by talking when you have this gate?
In one case only: Self-Projected Authority, through which you discover your choice by saying it out loud. It requires a defined G Center while the four centers placed before it in the order of authorities stay open, which the 13-33 alone achieves. Without Gate 33, another channel, the 1-8 for example, has to define the G Center.
