During a bus ride, one image crosses the mind, then another, without any of them demanding to be acted on. These thoughts pile up for the pleasure of being thought. No one insists on seeing them carried out, least of all the person who hosts them.
Thinking without an agenda
Another gate of the Ajna, Gate 24, Rationalization, keeps going back over the same thought until it has found a new form. Gate 11, Ideas, doesn’t linger like that: it supplies images and thoughts, one after another, with nothing requiring it to go back over them or take them anywhere.
Gate 56, Stimulation, waits in the Throat. When the chart contains it too, it forms the 11-56, the Channel of Curiosity, with Gate 11: ideas then find an outlet in speech, in the form of stories.
A swimming pool full of books
On a station platform, waiting for a delayed train, Anaïs imagined a library set up in an old swimming pool, then a card game where each card would be a street in her neighborhood. She didn’t write anything down. The train arrived; both ideas stayed on the platform.
Her partner sometimes asks her what she plans to do with all this. The question surprises her: these ideas weren’t asking anything of her.
At the office, this abundance sometimes works against her. In a meeting, she throws out four directions for the new logo while her colleagues are still on the first. People think she’s scattered, when nothing obliges her to settle on one.
A reservoir of images
Thinking without having to produce leaves room for play: you turn an idea over, push it to the point of absurdity, let it drop. None of them has to justify itself by a result; the one that leads nowhere is not a loss.
This play becomes shared as soon as Gate 56 enters the chart. Gate 11’s images become stories people listen to for pleasure, from which those around them draw whatever they like.
Mistaking an idea for a commitment
The risk begins when an idea passes itself off as a choice. The Ajna produces conclusions that look certain; an appealing idea, turned over long enough, ends up looking like a life plan. A Generator might quit their job to open the café they imagined one Sunday, without their Sacral having been called on by anything at all. Two months later, the drive isn’t there, and the Type’s frustration lets them know.
School and work demand useful ideas. Someone with Gate 11 learns early to justify each one, to promise they’ll carry it out, then wears themselves out keeping promises their ideas never made.
The people around them make the same mistake. A suggestion tossed out in passing over a meal comes back three weeks later as a question: “So, how’s that project going?” The person discovers that others thought they were committed when they were only thinking out loud.
For you, for others
For you
Your ideas owe you nothing; you owe them nothing either. Let the ones that don’t come back pass by, and tell someone about the ones that insist, for the pleasure of hearing them out loud. When it comes to deciding, your Authority is what counts, not the most beautiful of them.
For others
When this person tells you about an idea, don’t immediately ask them for a plan or a budget. Take it for what it is, a thought offered to you: if you like it, nothing stops you from using it.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 11: Ideas
Who are Gate 11’s ideas for?
First for the person who has them, for the pleasure of thinking them; then for those who hear them, when they are told. Nothing requires anything to come of them: an idea that stays an image has cost nothing. The gate doesn’t measure an idea by its usefulness.
Do you have to carry out your ideas when you have Gate 11?
Nothing requires it. The gate describes thoughts that come with no obligation attached; the ones that lead nowhere haven’t failed because of it.
What does Gate 56 do with Gate 11’s ideas?
It turns them into stories. From the Throat, Gate 56, Stimulation, tells them: with it, the 11-56 gives Gate 11’s images an outlet, a voice that shares them with those who listen.
Are Gate 11’s ideas correct?
No one asks them to be. The Ajna produces points of view, and Gate 11 produces images: their value lies in what they open up. Deciding remains the job of the Authority the calculation gives.
