A question with no answer gets studied for a long time, surrounded by facts checked one by one. An immediate yes or a clear no watches over the group; order comes back after every change.

The long haul and the moment

The Juxtaposition gives this cross the meaning of a fixed fate. Its gates do not keep the same pace: the 61 and the 62 take time, the question over years, the fact until it has been checked; the 50 and the 3, on the Design side, respond on the spot, one with agreement or a step back, the other with a yes from the gut when it is asked to put things in order.

A fern from 1911

In the university herbarium, a fern collected in 1911 bears a label placing it in a valley where no one has seen it since. Mélusine, who manages the collections, first checked the handwriting and the date against three registers; then the question remained: why that valley, and no other since?

She has been working on it in the evenings for four years and only talked about it once she was sure of every date, first to two colleagues she has known since her student days. Both offered to go with her to the valley in the spring.

Research built piece by piece

Gate 61, Mystery, keeps open a question no one around is asking anymore. An idea can grow out of it, then a whole piece of research.

Gate 62, Detail, names what can be checked. A riddle studied this way is nothing like a daydream: what is known about it is established piece by piece, so that others can pick it up.

Gate 50, Values, reacts on the spot to whatever would weaken the group, with agreement or a step back, before knowing the reasons.

Gate 3, Ordering, puts everything back in its place after a change, if the Sacral has accepted the request. After a collection is moved or a new tool arrives, everyone finds what they are looking for.

Sorting what was already sorted

With an open Spleen Center, a refusal can come from a worry in the air. It returns with every proposal and goes looking for reasons, which the judgment of the 50, focused on the moment, does not do.

When nothing is moving, the urge to put things in order can turn toward what was already in order. That kind of sorting answers no request, and the gut has accepted nothing: it fills a lull instead of serving a change.

For you, for others

For you

Give your question the time it asks for, and your decisions the time your authority needs: one does not settle the other.

For others

Ask a sister with this cross where she is with the question that occupies her, and listen to the answer without closing it down.

Frequently asked questions about the Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking

Do the 50 and the 3 work together?

Each in its own way, around the group. The 50 picks up at once what would damage it; the 3 puts away what a change has disturbed, once the Sacral has responded to the request.

Is a riddle studied in depth still a riddle?

Yes, for the 61. Study piles up facts, which the 62 names with care; the question is about what those facts do not explain.

Can a refusal without a reason be right?

Yes, in the moment. The 50 judges what the present situation would do to the group; its reasons come later, or never, and the same proposal may get a yes the following year.

What does the 62 keep from endless research?

The facts established along the way: a date, a place, a name, all verified. They remain valid even if the question they surround never closes.
