When a group grows slack, someone puts themselves to the test in front of it, then reports on what happened with facts everyone can check. The Design adds a question that is not looking for its answer; instinct keeps the whole thing from recklessness.
Around an absent Ajna
The two Design gates have their harmonic gates in the Ajna: Gate 24, Rationalization, for Gate 61, Mystery; Gate 17, Opinion, for Gate 62, Detail. The Ajna itself has no gate in the cross; no channel links any two of the four gates.
The Head presses to understand without giving the body anything to act on; the Throat says what is brought to it. Without the 24, the question of the 61 stays suspended, with nowhere to become a thought. Without the 17, the facts of the 62 come out one by one, with no opinion to gather them.
Transpersonal karma: that is the first meaning given to the Left Angle. The second has to do with the purpose of those who have it, which they do not fulfill without others.
The November drill
Yannick is a volunteer at the sea rescue station of a small harbor. The summer has been calm. The crew has gotten into the habit of going out only in good weather. One November evening, with a force seven wind forecast, he proposes a night drill and volunteers to play the castaway: an hour in the cold water, waiting to be found.
The next day, he hands the lifeboat’s skipper a single sheet: the launch time, the minute the searchlight picked him up, the heading followed, two missed maneuvers. At the next meeting, every crew member has annotated it, and the drill goes back on the calendar once a month.
Bringing a crew back up to standard
A group that has grown slack gets back to its level when one of its own puts themselves to the test in front of their teammates. Gate 51, Shock, supplies this will to test oneself, and a setback does not make it give up. Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, says in the moment whether the time and place are safe to attempt it.
The report owes its value to the 62: a time noted to the minute can be discussed on the evidence, a vague memory cannot. Everyone can go back over the facts without depending on the memory of the person reporting them.
The 61 brings something else, a question asked at the right moment, which makes a group doubt what it thought was settled. It decides nothing; it opens a reflection that lasts beyond the evening.
Shaking things up at the wrong time
A trial launched on a crew coming back from three outings in two days wakes no one up. It finishes off the very people it meant to revive: the jolt of the 51 serves a will that is dozing, not a fatigue already at its peak.
The facts of the 62 can also become a score. A report that lists everyone’s mistakes, read out in front of all, turns precision into a ranking, and crew members stop reporting what they are not sure of.
For you, for others
For you
Put yourself to the test when the group is dozing off, not when it is exhausted. Your reports are helpful as long as they describe what happened, without a scoreboard of mistakes.
For others
A teammate with this cross proposes a trial to you: accept it if you have reserves left, decline it otherwise, without looking for an excuse. Read their reports as facts; save their questions for the evenings when you have time to think them over.
Frequently asked questions about the Left Angle Cross of the Clarion
What are the questions of the 61 for in a group?
For shifting what everyone took as settled. The gate is drawn to what remains unexplained; its questions do not wait for a solution and push toward no action, but they open conversations that facts alone do not start.
Can the precision of the 62 hurt?
It can when it serves the competitiveness of the 51. An accurate fact given to help correct something is well received; the same fact cited to win an argument is received as an attack, even though it has not changed.
Who decides between the drive of the 51 and the alert of the 57?
Neither. The last word belongs to whatever holds authority in the chart. The alert says whether the moment is sound, the will says it wants to test itself; neither decides on a lasting commitment.
Does the Cross of the Clarion of Gate 57 tell the same story?
It has the same gates and starts from a different one. Here, the 51 holds the Personality Sun, and the trial the person sets themselves leads the way; in the Gate 57 version, instinct speaks first and the will follows it.
