Gate 32, Continuity, puts each stage through a sorting. A three-year cycle does not turn into routine when instinct says again, at the end of each job, that what comes next is still sound.
Gate 62, Detail, gives the work something to hold on to: the exact measurement, the right name for the tool, which the apprentice can check alone. Gate 61, Mystery, leaves room alongside for what cannot be explained, without asking anything of the work.
A stop without explanation
The pulling back of the 32 does not supply its reasons. An apprentice sent to another workshop without a word of explanation leaves convinced they have failed; telling them at least that the stop comes from a judgment of the moment, not from a fault, leaves them enough to carry on elsewhere.
