Two motors, no bridge between them
Two of the four centers the cross touches are motors: the Sacral of Gate 27, Caring, then the Root of Gate 41, Contraction. The four gates of the cross do not meet in any channel.
The 27’s harmonic gate is Gate 50, Values, in the Spleen Center. In a chart where this 27-50, the Channel of Preservation, was the only channel, the person would be a Generator and would decide through the Sacral. The instinct of Gate 28, Game Player, would inform the choice there, and the gut would make it.

The night of the first black ice
On the night of the first black ice, the garage’s tow truck goes out four times. The fourth call is from the district’s home care aide: her car has slid into the ditch, and her first visits start at six. Gauthier looks for a moment at the key ring hanging on the board, then hands her the key to his own car, for the week.
In the spring, the mechanic in the neighboring valley retires and offers him his tow truck along with his customers. The banker finds the price high. Gauthier walks around the truck, then sits behind the wheel; when he climbs down, the question is settled. He signs without having received the latest financial statement.
At the shopkeepers’ meeting about the closing of the gas station, no one consults him, and he keeps quiet. He only shares his idea of a fuel pump in front of the workshop on the day the mayor comes by to ask him for it.
Helping without knowing what comes next
Help can then be offered without knowing where it will lead. The 27 gives concrete care as soon as the gut consents, to a customer, to a stranger in a ditch, to oneself as well; the 28, at the Personality Earth, accepts the games whose outcome remains open, provided instinct has let them through.
The 41 supplies the push that takes you out of the familiar. Gate 31, Leading, puts a road into words when asked for one.
The fatigue of a yes given too quickly
A yes granted before the gut has responded is paid for later, in fatigue: one more breakdown call on a snowy evening, then another, and the week holds together on willpower alone.
The care of the 27 can also run on other people’s energy. When the Sacral is open, it lasts as long as the workshop is full, then drops in the evening, when the person finds themselves alone.
The pressure of the 41 looks for an outlet; the Game Player can offer it a bad one, a game accepted to ease the waiting, without the green light of instinct. One slow winter, Gauthier buys at auction a lot of tractor parts he has no use for.

Does Gate 28 make a person reckless?
No. The Game Player bets on what the instinct of the Spleen Center lets through, an instinct that serves survival. Recklessness begins when a game is accepted without this signal, to please someone or to follow the group.
Is helping without knowing how things will turn out reasonable?
The care of the 27 asks for no guarantee: it responds to a specific request, through the gut. With the 28, instinct has also let the game through: the commitment is nothing like a leap in the dark.
Why do the words of the 31 wait to be asked for?
Because leading, for this gate, is an act carried out at a group’s request, for the duration of a decision. Offered unasked, direction has no one to receive it; the person wears themselves out repeating it.
