An idea understood by one person stays theirs alone as long as the words are missing. That is where the work begins: finding the sentence that makes it audible to someone else, without taking anything away from it.

Making it your own, then saying it

The word assimilation means taking in something that came from elsewhere and making it your own. Gate 23 does this work through speech: it takes an understanding that has no shared form yet and looks for words that others can hear. Its center is the Throat, where what is inside takes a form others can perceive.

The understanding in question comes from its partner, Gate 43, Insight, in the Ajna: a certainty that lands all at once, with no steps to show. Together they form 23-43, the Channel of Structuring. Gate 43 has understood; the explaining falls to Gate 23, and how the idea will be received depends partly on it.

What Gate 23 puts into words remains one person’s understanding, made audible to another. It does not speak on behalf of a group, and it does not turn an idea into common knowledge.

Another channel can also define the Throat, such as 16-48, coming from the Spleen Center, without Gate 23 forming its own.

The plot that yields less

Standing at the edge of a plot that yields less than the others, the agricultural advisor has understood why. In front of the farmer, Sylvain’s first explanation is about drainage and compaction; the man nods without following. Sylvain starts again with the spade, the ruts left by the tractor wheels, the water that pools in spring. This time, the farmer finishes the sentence for him.

At home, his daughter asks him what he does at work. It takes him four tries, and the last one fits into a single image: he helps the fields breathe. He likes that answer more than many of the reports he has written.

Making an idea usable

For the listener, an idea becomes usable once Gate 23 has found its form. The gate does not touch the substance; it reworks the presentation until the other person can make use of it.

The same content can come across as a whim or seem self-evident, depending on the words that carry it. Finding the right ones turns an isolated idea into a solution others adopt.

When the chart brings together Gates 23 and 43, this work concerns new ideas, coming from a knowing that does not explain itself.

Too early, or too complicated

An explanation offered before anyone asked for it lands badly, however clear it is. One Sunday, at some friends’ house, an architect who is a Projector explains why their living room stays cold despite the heating. They thank her politely, the conversation moves on, and she goes home a little bitter. The explanation was right; it arrived before the question.

With an open Throat, Gate 23 appears in the chart without that center being defined. The words then adjust to whoever is listening, to the point of borrowing their turns of phrase: by adopting everyone’s vocabulary, the person can lose track of the idea they wanted to get across.

For you, for others

For you

Try your explanation on someone who doesn’t know the subject. When that person can say it back in their own words, you have found the form.

For others

A colleague with Gate 23 is explaining an idea and you can’t follow: tell them so plainly, because another attempt helps them more than a polite nod.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 23: Assimilation

Does Gate 23 start by understanding what others think?

Not primarily. Gate 23 sits in the Throat: it puts things into words. What it assimilates is an understanding, that of Gate 43 when it is present, so that it can be said.

Does Gate 23 pass knowledge on to the group?

It passes an idea on to whoever is listening, one person or a whole room. The original knowing stays individual; how it is received depends on the words and the timing, and nothing in the calculation makes Gate 23 the voice of a collective.

What happens to an idea Gate 23 can’t manage to express?

It stays with the person who had it. The gate does not guarantee the right words on the first try: it sometimes takes several attempts, and listeners who say plainly when they can’t follow.

What makes an explanation audible?

Words the listener shares, and a moment when they are waiting for an answer. Gate 23 works on the first; the second depends on the Strategy of each Type: the invitation for a Projector, informing beforehand for a Manifestor.
