The pressure starts in the body, then settles on a specific lack: a safer roof, a place at the shared table. The need came before the words, and it stays pressing until it has been said.

A lack with an address

Behind every request from Gate 19 lies a lack that can be pointed to: a bed, a shelter, a recognized place in a group. The Root, a motor that puts things under pressure, supplies the push; Gate 19, Wanting, gives it this target, a need in the process of being put into words more than an object to possess.

Its partner is Gate 49, Principles, which belongs to the Solar Plexus. Together they form the 19-49, the Channel of Synthesis. There the need enters an emotional wave: the same request, urgent on a tired Sunday evening, can easily wait on a vacation morning.

For any chart that contains this channel, Authority is Emotional, since the Solar Plexus takes precedence over all other centers. Type, however, isn’t fixed, since neither the Root nor the Solar Plexus reaches the Throat by this route: the 19-49 alone makes a Projector; the 27-50, which also defines the Sacral, makes a Generator; the 21-45, which runs from the Heart to the Throat, a Manifestor.

Gate 19 can appear without Gate 49: the channel is then missing, and the Root can remain undefined.

A room of one’s own

Salomé has just moved in with her partner. In the second week, she announces that she needs a room of her own, even a small one, to work in. She doesn’t yet know what she will use it for; she knows the lack is there, and that it won’t go away by itself.

At the hiking club, the same push takes another form. Salomé doesn’t have a car; the hikes start far from the train station. At the next meeting, she asks straight out for a carpool to be organized, schedule included.

Naming the lack

A need that has been identified gets dealt with; a vague need weighs on everyone. Gate 19 moves the Root’s pressure from vague to precise: it’s no longer “something’s wrong,” it’s “I need a room to work in.”

When it finds its target, the Root’s pressure becomes drive: the person gets moving for something they can name.

In the channel, Gate 49 adds a rule to the need: whoever asks for what they lack also proposes a fair way of getting it, which others can accept without hearing it as a reproach.

A need that isn’t one’s own

The need of someone close can pass for one’s own. Salomé asks for a new car the week both her sisters replace theirs: it’s their impatience she brought home. An open Root lends itself to this, since it has no pressure of its own and amplifies that of the people around them.

A need can also turn into action without anyone being told. With a Manifestor, whose Strategy is to inform, the people close to them discover a subscription signed up for or a piece of furniture ordered, and push back; anger rises on both sides.

Keeping a need to yourself doesn’t make it disappear. The pressure then spills over onto the first subject that comes along: a curt remark about the dishes, unrelated to the missing room.

For you, for others

For you

Say what you lack in the most concrete terms possible: a room, an hour, a ride. A specific need finds its answer more easily than a general unease.

For others

When someone close to you with Gate 19 makes an abrupt request, a specific need stands behind it: answer the substance, yes or no, instead of arguing about the tone.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 19: Wanting

Is a person with Gate 19 demanding?

The name describes a need seeking to be expressed, with no judgment about its size. The Root’s pressure makes it insistent; what is asked for, and when, depends on the Strategy and Authority of each chart.

Can a Gate 19 need change in importance from one day to the next?

Yes. When Gate 49 is present, a need’s urgency follows the wave of the Solar Plexus more than the facts. Without it, the swing can come from elsewhere, for example an open Root taking on the pressure of the people around.

Are Gate 19’s needs only material?

Nothing limits them to that. The name says wanting, with no object: housing, quiet or a place in a group can be what the pressure points to.

Does a need have to be met right away?

Answering quickly relieves the pressure without guaranteeing the need was the right one. Pressure put out in a hurry comes back from another side; naming the need and then letting it wait makes it possible to check that it holds.
