After the same bus has been late three times in one week, the rule is set: this route doesn’t work on Mondays. Here the mind links scattered facts, sees a pattern in them, then draws a conclusion ready to be spoken. All it will take is a colleague who rides it every Monday to put it to the test.

A pattern, then a conclusion

Two gates of the Ajna reach a conclusion by opposite paths. Gate 43, Insight, receives one all at once, which will then have to be explained. Gate 17, Opinion, builds it: it sorts what it observes into patterns and deduces a view from them, every step of which can be shown. Gate 24, Rationalization, moves differently again, going back over the same idea until it transforms it.

An opinion formed in the Ajna still has to pass through the Throat to be spoken. That is where Gate 17’s partner is, Gate 62, Detail: together they form the 17-62, the Channel of Acceptance, where the conclusion comes out along with the facts that support it.

Gate 17’s Ajna can also be defined without this channel, by the 4-63, which ties it to the Head. The gate then works in a center with a consistent method, even without Gate 62 to supply its details.

The Monday complaints

In the after-sales department of a bicycle manufacturer, Karim has been reading complaints for six months. One morning, he lays three forms side by side: same model, same brake supplier, same delivery weeks. His conclusion fits in one sentence, and he can retrace it for anyone who asks, form by form.

In the evening, the same machinery runs on subjects with nothing at stake. At the parents’ association meeting, he explains why the school cafeteria is losing sign-ups by linking the posted menus to dismissal times. A mother asks him if he has ever eaten there. Never.

Logic you can follow

A Gate 17 conclusion can be discussed because it shows its path. Each step can be challenged separately: the other person doesn’t have to reject the opinion wholesale, they can point to the link that seems weak to them.

Spotting a pattern helps wherever facts pile up without order, in a history of breakdowns or the schedule of an overstretched team.

With Gate 62, this reasoning finds its evidence: the conclusion arrives with the specific details that make it possible to check.

When an opinion stands in for a choice

A well-built conclusion looks like a decision. Nora, an accountant, has shown with figures to back it up that moving the agency would save the team an hour a day; she is offered the job of leading the project. Her chart has Emotional Authority: the reasoning was sound, but the commitment required waiting until her answer no longer shifted with her moods. She said yes that same evening.

The opinion itself can be borrowed. A pattern defended in a meeting by a self-assured colleague comes back in the evening as a personal conclusion, with the same confidence, with nothing to recall where it came from. An open Ajna, with no method of its own, lends itself to this slide: it takes up the logic of whoever it is talking to and believes it to be its own.

For you, for others

For you

Keep track of the steps in your reasoning as much as its conclusion: they are how others can follow you, or show you the mistake. Save your opinions for the subjects where people ask for them.

For others

To contradict this person’s opinion, aim at a step rather than the conclusion: they will go back over their reasoning with you, where head-on opposition would make them dig in.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 17: Opinion

Does Mental Authority come from Gate 17?

Not from the gate itself: Authority depends on the defined centers. The 17-62 with no other channel makes a Projector with Mental Authority, since only the Ajna and the Throat are defined. If the 28-38 is added, the Spleen Center and the Root are defined in turn, and Authority becomes Splenic.

Is a Gate 17 opinion necessarily right?

No. The pattern may rest on too few cases; the conclusion inherits that. The mind of the Ajna produces confident conclusions, which doesn’t make them accurate; Gate 17’s advantage is that you can trace its reasoning back and find the point where it gives way.

Is a Gate 17 opinion a matter of intuition?

No. Intuition, in the Human Design sense, belongs to the Spleen Center, which reacts in the moment without giving its reasons; Gate 57 in fact takes its name, Intuitive Clarity, from it. Gate 17 works in the Ajna, in steps that can be retraced.

What should you do with your opinions when no one asks for them?

Neither silence them nor impose them. An opinion that has been asked for finds a listening ear; offered to someone who wasn’t looking for anything, it runs into defensiveness, even when it’s right.
