Knowing how isn’t always enough; the gesture also has to be seen, or the method put into words. Skill is then measured at the moment it comes out, in front of someone who can make use of it.

A plural name

Gate 16 is called Skills, in the plural and with nothing added. Nothing in this name reserves it for one art or trade: the hand that repairs and the voice that explains have the same place in it. The gate belongs to the Throat, through which what a person knows how to do passes to the outside, in words or gestures.

In the Spleen Center, Gate 48, Depth, completes Gate 16 to form the 16-48, the Channel of the Wavelength. When it is missing, the gesture lacks a support: the instinct that suddenly points to the detail that needs reworking. The skill still shows, without that in-the-moment judgment.

The Tuesday workshop

On Tuesday evenings, in the community hall, a small group knits around a table. Fanny doesn’t just fix a neighbor’s dropped stitch: she does it in front of her, slows the movement down, guides her fingers; the neighbor goes home able to do it again on her own.

One day the club asked her to write up the steps for its newsletter; the page stayed blank. The same explanation comes out in one go when a teenager arrives with an unraveled row.

Gate 48 is also in her chart. Faced with a piece of knitting that puckers, she puts her finger on the faulty stitch before undoing anything; the explanation comes afterward.

Knowledge that passes to others

Whoever watches the person at work goes away with know-how they didn’t have before. A skill kept to oneself only serves the one who has it; Gate 16’s is passed on by being shown, at the moment someone needs it.

With Gate 48, the demonstration rests on an instant judgment from the body: the gesture shown corrects the right detail.

Showing too much, or too soon

A workshop to run, offered insistently by an association: the person with Gate 16 ends up accepting, without enthusiasm. In a Generator, this shows quickly: the gestures are right, the workshop goes ahead, but they show without pleasure and leave weary of a skill they usually love to share.

When the energy comes from the Sacral, showing can give way to doing. A chart that combines the 16-48 and the 27-50 links the Sacral to the Spleen Center, then to the Throat through Gates 48 and 16; the result is a Manifesting Generator with Sacral Authority. In a hurry to be done, the person takes the work back out of the learner’s hands; the job gets done, the lesson is lost.

A defined Throat has its own tendency: the person expresses themselves in a consistent way, and may demonstrate what they know at every opportunity, at the same volume, whether or not anyone can use it.

For you, for others

For you

Showing works better for you than explaining in writing: when someone asks you how to do something, offer to do it in front of them. And don’t measure your skills by your diplomas, which only capture part of them.

For others

To learn from a colleague with Gate 16, watch them work and ask your questions during the gesture. Side by side, in front of the work, they pass on what a written report would leave out.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 16: Skills

Where do Gate 16’s skills come from?

The name doesn’t say. Training or natural ease, the gate makes no distinction: it describes skills that exist by being shown.

Do Skills and Power Skills mean the same thing?

No. Gate 14, Power Skills, belongs to the Sacral: its skill comes from working energy. Gate 16 belongs to the Throat, and its skill depends on the moment it is shown or spoken.

Does Gate 16 need an audience?

An audience, no; an occasion, yes. Gate 16’s skill goes through the Throat, which brings out what is lived: a single person who needs it is enough to make it appear.

With Gate 48, does the skill change in nature?

It gains a support without changing its object. Gate 48, Depth, belongs to the Spleen Center, which judges the moment without giving its reasons; the channel carries that judgment into Gate 16’s gesture or words.
