Chart authorityEmotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego or Self-Projected

Asked point-blank, the person answers exactly the way they behave. Their way of being passes straight into speech in the present, with all that is accurate, and sometimes blunt, about it.

A way of being that gets spoken

Gate 10, Behavior of the Self, is in the G Center. The system places love of self there, understood as the capacity to act in line with who you are. Gate 20, The Now, belongs to the Throat. Together, they carry this way of being into expression, in the present.

The G Center and the Throat have no motor power. Without another channel, the chart is a Projector’s; the G Center, the only one of the two that counts in the order of authorities, gives Self-Projected Authority: the decision takes shape as the person speaks.

The chart’s other channels can shift almost everything. With the 21-45, the Heart connects to the Throat: the chart becomes a Manifestor with Ego Authority. With the 10-34, Gate 34 joins Gates 10 and 20: the 20-34 forms too, and the Sacral touches the Throat. Manifesting Generator, Sacral Authority. Still ruled out are the Reflector, Lunar Authority and Mental Authority, since the G Center outranks the Ajna and the Head.

In terms of circuitry, the 10-20 belongs to the Individual group and to what Jovian Archive calls the Integration Channel, which it forms with the 10-57, the 20-34 and the 34-57. These four channels revolve around four gates, 10, 20, 34 and 57; each of them has three possible partners, something no other gate in the BodyGraph has.

Answering as you are

In a meeting, an engineer is asked whether he supports management’s project. He answers straight away, without any niceties: “No, I wouldn’t work like that.” Nothing calculated in the substance or in the voice. His colleagues know where they stand, some hold it against him, but what he says the moment he’s asked matches the way he behaves the rest of the year.

The channel doesn’t choose the moment to speak. For a Projector, words carry when they answer an invitation, and the engineer was asked. If the same man explained to the team, unprompted, how to work, he would run into a wall. With Self-Projected Authority, the decision itself takes shape in the sentence: he learns he won’t go by hearing himself say “I’m not going.”

Behavior you can hear

In a group where everyone adjusts their words to their audience, a person whose expression follows their behavior serves as a reference point. What they say today, they’ll do tomorrow.

The present tense of Gate 20 matters too. The channel lends itself to answers given on the spot, when the question arrives: a job interview, a discussion that tips over and calls for a clear position.

When the chart is a Projector’s, this frankness finds its use at the moment it’s expected. A team that has got into the habit of asking the engineer’s opinion before deciding receives an answer free of calculation; he gains success from it, which the system defines as being recognized and seeing your perspective put to use.

Frankness out of place

Voiced when nobody asked for it, these words sound like a lecture. The colleague hears a judgment on how he does things, even when the sentence was only about the person who said it.

The warning signal depends on the chart’s Type. For a Projector, bitterness comes when accurate words go unnoticed for lack of an invitation; for a Manifestor, anger rises when someone tries to silence them. In both cases, the words came out at the wrong time or were blocked.

Conditioning plays a part too. A child corrected every time he said too frankly what he thought learns to soften his sentences, then to keep quiet. As an adult, he no longer quite knows what he would have said.

For you, for others

For you

Answer as you are, without polishing what comes out. If your chart is a Projector’s, let the question come first: your words carry when they’re asked for. With Self-Projected Authority, the decision takes shape in what you hear yourself say.

For others

A frank question gets a frank answer from this person. What they say in the moment describes their way of being, not your worth; take it as information about them.

Frequently asked questions about the Channel of Awakening

Does the 10-20 rule out certain Types?

Only the Reflector. Without another channel, it gives a Projector; a motor connected to the Throat by another path makes it a Manifestor, or a Manifesting Generator if the Sacral is defined. Add the 3-60, and the Sacral comes into play without touching the Throat: you then have a Generator.

Is Mental Authority possible with this channel?

No. The channel defines the G Center, which comes before the Ajna and the Head in the order of authorities. When no higher center is defined, it decides itself, through speech.

Does Gate 20 form a channel on its own?

No. Besides Gate 10, it can pair with Gate 34 or Gate 57; without any of these partners, it stays in the chart, and the Throat needs another channel to be defined.

Is “Awakening” meant in a spiritual sense?

In English sources, the channel is called the Channel of Awakening. Human Design describes it through its two gates: a way of being, that of Gate 10, which becomes speech in the present through Gate 20. The calculation says nothing more.
