Kin 245: Red Spectral Serpent
Dreamspell
245of 260
Nothing truly comes undone for the Spectral Serpent until its body has let go of it.
A breakup decided in the head can leave the shoulders knotted for months. A habit given up, a city left behind, a sport abandoned only disappear on the day the body stops looking for them. Your tone lets go of what reaches the end of its course; your seal does it in its own way, through the body: trembling, sweating, moving, breathing differently. When the release comes, it is complete, and it shows.
The Serpent’s reflex goes the other way. Under threat, it contracts to protect itself. Yet an ending, even a wanted one, looks like a threat to a body attached to what it knows. So it tightens precisely when your tone asks it to loosen, and the dissolving gets stuck in the muscles even though it is settled in the mind.
The Serpent guides itself here, with a doubled instinct. No outside help to open the hand, then. The same body that locks up also knows the way back, and it is up to the body, not to reasoning, to undo. A Serpent that guides itself discovers that it is both the lock and the key. What has your mind already let go of that your body is still holding on to?
