A job that three people have judged impossible attracts instead of discouraging: the will measures itself there against its own limits. The results are reported with precise facts. An unanswered question accompanies the work without ever steering it.

The gates of the Clarion, from another angle

The Cross of the Clarion, in the Left Angle, has the same four gates as this one. Only the meaning of the angle changes. There is no longer any question of transpersonal karma or of a purpose that cannot be reached without others: the Juxtaposition refers to a fixed fate, and this fate foretells no event. Each of the four gates does exactly what it does in the other cross.

The grandfather clock at the back of the shop

In a clockmaker’s workshop in a small town in the Jura, a Comtoise clock has been waiting for two years on the workbench at the back. Three fellow clockmakers have turned down its movement: too many worn parts, no supplier left.

One Sunday, Ulrich takes it apart to find out whether he can do it. He spends the winter on it, remakes two wheels by hand, starts the third over after a failed attempt. Nobody has asked him for a deadline, and he announces none.

In the spring, an antiques dealer brings him a second Comtoise clock, older still, that nobody has wanted to touch. Ulrich opens the case, looks at the movement for a minute and declines, unable to say what held him back.

What the trial leaves behind

A job others have abandoned can find someone here to take it up. Gate 51, Shock, measures itself against difficulty itself; a failed attempt spurs it on instead of stopping it.

Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, at the Personality Earth, chooses among these trials in the moment. The one that endangers the person or the piece makes itself known by a pulling back, before the urge to measure oneself has decided in its place.

Gate 62, Detail, leaves a trail others can follow: figures, dates, named parts. The work becomes verifiable by someone who was not there.

With a 4/1 profile, what has been closely checked passes first through those who already know the person. The question of Gate 61, Mystery, cannot be passed on: it remains a curiosity about what resists explanation, and it rekindles interest in a piece once all the facts are known.

Jobs taken on for honor

When every difficult object becomes a trial to win, the workshop fills up with jobs accepted for the sake of honor. The ones that pay the rent, a battery to replace, a winding stem to change, wait behind.

An open Spleen Center looks for what feels safe and clings to it. The familiar workshop, the same tools, the same morning routine can then be kept long after they have stopped doing any good, simply because letting go of them would be frightening.

For you, for others

For you

Keep the trials that teach you something and let go of those that only serve to prove you can do it.

For others

When you entrust a difficult object to an artisan whose chart has this cross, give her time to measure herself against it without demanding a date; if she turns down a job without saying why, do not insist.

Frequently asked questions about the Juxtaposition Cross of Shock

Why take on what others have turned down?

Because Gate 51 is set in motion by contact with difficulty. An easy job wakes nothing up; a job said to be impossible offers a limit to test, which does not mean it has to succeed.

Does a failed attempt discourage the 51?

It spurs it on: a setback wakes the will of the Heart, it does not put it out. Taking a part up again after a failed attempt is part of the trial, not its failure.

Does an unanswered question get in the way of the work?

It accompanies it. The Head raises the question without supplying any energy to act, so it does not pull the hands away from the work; it occupies the mind while they are busy.

Can a trial be turned down without losing face?

Yes, and that is precisely what makes it useful. A trial you cannot decline becomes an obligation; accepted by the chart’s authority, it becomes a choice again.
