What is lived stays out of conversations until it is ready, then comes out for someone who has a use for it. The route needs no explanation; the person’s way of doing things can be recognized even in their stories.
Without the Listener in the cross
In Human Design, the Left Angle is transpersonal karma: people with it live it through their encounters; as for the purpose pursued, it needs other people. The cross lacks Gate 13, the Listener, the harmonic gate of Gate 33, Privacy: the Channel of the Prodigal only forms with it, elsewhere in the chart, and the person’s stories are then enriched by stories others have confided to them.
The ladders on the first day
On the first day of each new class, the apprentice roofers watch Gérald check every ladder twice, then have them check it.
He does not say why. The apprentices quickly learn to recognize his knots, tied in a way no one else at the training center uses.
Six years earlier, when he still ran his small business, a worker fell from a roof, without serious injury, because of a ladder set up in a hurry. He only spoke about it to the insurer. Since then, to no one.
He has never explained, either, what made him move from roofs to training. His former apprentices, now craftsmen themselves, still check every ladder twice and tie their knots his way; none of them knows the story of the fall.
Lived experience, then the rule
What Gate 33 holds back is told later, without outbursts; it can spare others a mistake already paid for.
Placed at the Earth, Gate 19, Wanting, names what was missing; the story, or the silence that precedes it, then extends into a request: a rule, a piece of equipment, a habit to adopt.
Gate 2, the Direction of the Self, holds the route without explaining it, and Gate 1, Self-Expression, gives the person’s actions a way of doing things that others remember and imitate.
Telling the story to be recognized
The 19 can point to a recognized place in a group as a need; the desire to obtain it then pushes the person to tell the story too soon. An open Throat heightens this impulse, since it amplifies the talk in the air; the episode then comes out raw, before it has settled, without being of use to anyone.
The voice of the story can be borrowed too. An open G Center hands direction and way of doing things over to the people around: the story takes on the voice of someone the person admires, and the route followed becomes that of the group whose recognition they are waiting for.
For you, for others
For you
Keep what has just happened to yourself, without guilt: your way of doing things, which others recognize, already passes on part of what you have learned.
For others
With someone close whose chart has this cross, do not try to get the story of a failure right away. Their actions and instructions already bear its trace. The story will come when it is ready, in front of someone it can be of use to.
Frequently asked questions about the Left Angle Cross of Refinement
When is lived experience ready to be told?
When it fits into a calm story, unburdened of details that concern no one else. As long as it comes out in fragments, the experience is still settling.
Does the route of Gate 2 have to be justified?
It rests on no argument. It gives a direction of travel, without the destination; requiring the person to justify a choice of route is asking for an explanation the gate does not provide.
Is a recognizable way of doing things enough to convince?
It makes the person recognizable, which is not the same thing. The mark of Gate 1 comes from who the person is; it replaces neither the ripened experience of the 33 nor the moment chosen to tell it.
What request goes with the story?
That of Gate 19, at the Earth: a precise need, named plainly. It extends the story instead of replacing it, and nothing obliges it to wait until the story is ready.
