The 12 rising signs in astrology
The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign that was rising in the east, on the horizon, at the moment and place of birth. It changes sign about every two hours, so you need the exact time of birth to know it. It describes first impressions and the way you approach the world, and it adds to the Sun sign without replacing it.
From Aries to Pisces
- Aries Rising Cardinal Fire sign on the horizon The door hasn’t even closed behind them and they’ve already spoken: a hello thrown out to the whole room, a question about where to put their bag, a word about the late bus.
- Taurus Rising Fixed Earth sign on the horizon Taurus Rising is readily credited with a kind of slowness: someone placid, a little absent, not to be rushed.
- Gemini Rising Mutable Air sign on the horizon “You already know everyone”: the remark comes up often, barely a quarter of an hour after they arrive somewhere.
- Cancer Rising Cardinal Water sign on the horizon A Leo Sun and Cancer Rising: on paper, everything needed to shine in company.
- Leo Rising Fixed Fire sign on the horizon The Sun rules Leo, and when this sign is on the Ascendant, the Sun also becomes the chart ruler, so its placement weighs twice, on identity and on the way of presenting oneself.
- Virgo Rising Mutable Earth sign on the horizon Before sitting down in the waiting room, they straighten the stack of magazines that was leaning, then reread the form they were handed and fix a wrongly filled-in date with a stroke of the pen.
- Libra Rising Cardinal Air sign on the horizon Two families eyeing each other at a wedding reception, a condo owners’ meeting about to come to blows over the elevator bill: this is the kind of room where Libra Rising stands out.
- Scorpio Rising Fixed Water sign on the horizon At first contact, a person with Scorpio Rising asks questions and says little about themselves.
- Sagittarius Rising Mutable Fire sign on the horizon “It felt like we’d known each other for years”: that’s what people say, afterward, when they’ve met a Sagittarius Rising on a night train or during a summer program.
- Capricorn Rising Cardinal Earth sign on the horizon In the northern hemisphere, Capricorn rises quickly over the horizon, so Capricorn Rising is less common there than most others.
- Aquarius Rising Fixed Air sign on the horizon Saturn and Uranus share the rulership of Aquarius, and an Ascendant in this sign bears the mark of both: a somewhat formal politeness on one side, a freedom of tone that surprises on the other.
- Pisces Rising Mutable Water sign on the horizon Two women leave the same gallery opening with opposite memories of a person with Pisces Rising: one found them warm and attentive, the other absent, as if somewhere else.
