The workshop open house
The vocational high school’s open house takes place on a Saturday in February. In the welding shop, Séverine waits behind her station without announcing anything.
A middle schooler comes over and asks why the metal does not melt the same way everywhere. Séverine switches on a station, hands her a mask, runs a short bead and shows her, on the piece still glowing red, where the heat stopped. The explanations then come effortlessly, one question after another, until closing time.
Before showing her students a weld she has never taught, she redoes it alone, three evenings in a row, until the piece holds when bent. On Thursday, the demonstration lasts ten minutes; no one sees the three evenings.
A gesture that may have passed the test
What is shown in front of the person who has a use for it reaches them at the moment it helps: the 16 passes the skill through the Throat at that very instant. What it shows may have passed the scrutiny of the 63, which lets nothing settle in as a given without having tested it.
