Chart authorityAlways Emotional

Depending on their mood, the same person has a whole office laughing or doesn’t say three words all day. Here speech follows the movement of emotions, and it only comes out well at the moment it finds its place.

An emotion that reaches the Throat

Gate 22, Openness, belongs to the Solar Plexus, the center of the emotional wave. Gate 12, Caution, is in the Throat; Human Design describes it as a gate that waits for an opening before expressing itself. The channel ties expression to mood: what gets said depends on where the wave is.

The Solar Plexus is a motor, and this channel connects it directly to the Throat. Every chart that has it is therefore a Manifestor’s, or a Manifesting Generator’s when the Sacral is defined elsewhere, with the 3-60 for example. Projector and Generator are impossible. Since the Solar Plexus holds first place in the order of authorities, the decision always goes through the emotional wave.

The 12-22 belongs to the Individual circuit. Along with the 35-36, it is one of only two channels running from the Solar Plexus to the Throat. Its subtitle, “A Design of a Social Being,” speaks of a social being.

Speaking when the wave allows

One Tuesday evening, a translator has friends over. She leads the conversation, draws everyone in, finds the word that makes people laugh. On Thursday, at a dinner at someone else’s, she listens and barely answers, with nothing having happened in between. Someone asks her: “Is everything all right?” Everything is fine. The wave is elsewhere.

With this channel, the Manifestor’s Strategy, informing before acting, goes through speech itself, while Emotional Authority asks them to wait. An important announcement, leaving or resigning, is best made once the wave has passed, when the urge to speak holds from one moment to the next. For a Manifesting Generator, a response from the Sacral also has to come before the announcement.

Words that touch

When the wave and the moment are in tune, this channel’s words have warmth.

Gate 12 brings a useful restraint. A delicate remark, held back until the other person can hear it, gets through where the same sentence said too early would have hurt.

A wedding toast given at the right point in the wave can move a room without a single stock phrase.

As a Manifestor, the person finds peace when they have informed those their words and actions affect; as a Manifesting Generator, they find satisfaction when something launched on a genuine response comes to completion.

Words that come out too soon

The main risk is speaking at the peak or in the trough of the wave. At the peak, the translator agrees to organize the whole family’s trip; once she comes back down, she is still bound by her word. In the trough, a harsh sentence can slip out and stay a long time in the memory of the person who received it.

The world expects immediate answers. In a meeting, she is asked for her opinion on the spot; she answers so as not to seem hesitant, and the opinion given in the heat of the moment reflects only one point in the wave.

Conditioning also weighs in the other direction. People criticize her silences and expect her to be even-tempered in company. Forcing speech when the wave is low produces flat words that nobody remembers; what’s left is the fatigue of having played a part.

Anger, the Manifestor’s Not-Self Theme, which often piles on top of frustration in the Manifesting Generator, rises when what has been set in motion is blocked.

For you, for others

For you

Let your mood change the way you speak. For an announcement that matters, wait until the wave has passed, then inform those your decision affects; your silences don’t need explaining.

For others

Avoid asking them for a final opinion on the spot: give them time and come back later. One evening’s silence says nothing about what this person thinks of you.

Frequently asked questions about the Channel of Openness

Can a Projector have the 12-22 channel?

No, nor can a Generator. The channel connects a motor, the Solar Plexus, to the Throat: the chart is a Manifestor’s, or a Manifesting Generator’s if the Sacral is defined. The Authority is always Emotional.

Can you hear mood swings with this channel?

Yes. It carries the emotional wave into speech, which makes mood changes audible. The system describes this wave as the natural movement of a defined Solar Plexus, rising and falling without any outside cause.

Why wait before announcing a decision?

With Emotional Authority, no single point on the wave shows the whole situation. An announcement that holds from one mood to the next has every chance of remaining valid once it’s been made.

The 35-36 also runs from the Solar Plexus to the Throat: what do the two channels share?

The same limits on Type and Authority, since each connects the emotional motor to the Throat. Everything else sets them apart. Their circuits differ, Individual for the 12-22, Collective and Abstract sub-circuit for the 35-36, and so do their gates: Caution and Openness on one side, Change and Crisis on the other.
