A wait imposed from outside does not eat away at this person: the momentum stays in reserve, without trying to force its way through. When movement starts again, it upends everything at once; what remains afterward is to put things back in order and sort out what deserves to be kept.

From the Personality Sun to the Design Earth

Gate 60 at the Personality Sun and Gate 3 at the Design Earth form the Channel of Mutation in this version: the Root supplies the pressure, the Sacral the force, and change moves forward in pulses, long halts followed by a restart all in one go. The other two gates have their harmonic gates outside the cross: the 11 for Gate 56, Stimulation, the 27 for Gate 50, Values.

Six weeks too many

A ruptured Achilles tendon, in the second round of a regional tournament, ends the season for Honorine, a saber fencer at a suburban club. She does not count the days.

She comes to the club two evenings a week, on her crutches, to keep the score sheet for the juniors. Her teammates are surprised that she never talks about her comeback; she simply does not think about it.

In March, the surgeon clears her to start training again. She goes on keeping the score sheets. At the end of April, the fencing master asks her, at the edge of the strip, whether she ever plans to put her mask back on; she realizes she has waited six weeks longer than necessary, out of habit.

She steps back onto the strip the following Saturday. The juniors, who had never seen her fence, discover someone other than the Tuesday scorekeeper.

Keeping the momentum warm

A long period of stillness does not eat into the reserve of the Root: the pressure is not wasted on protests or on following up, it waits for the restart.

The restart of the 3-60 goes far without leaving disorder behind it. Gate 3, Ordering, at the Design Earth, puts back in order what it upended as soon as the gut consents. What returns in the new order passes through the immediate yes or recoil of Gate 50.

Gate 56, at the Personality Earth, makes the wait part of the story. Its listeners learn from it that a halt can be a time of reserve rather than a failure.

The pause that outlives the halt

Patience can outlive its reason for being. A clearance arrives, a proposal awaits an answer, and the person stays still out of habit; in a Generator, frustration ends up signaling the missed change.

The 56 can also take the place of the restart. Telling the wait at length, its episodes and its characters, gives the impression of moving forward when nothing has budged; the listeners end up knowing the pause better than what it was preparing.

For you, for others

For you

With every proposal you receive during a pause, check whether the halt that was holding you back still exists. If it has gone, let your gut respond to the proposal itself.

For others

If a friend has this cross, she gets through her halts without being damaged by them, and your prodding will change nothing. The day you have a real offer, a position, a project with a date, simply present it to her. If she says yes, the movement may well be fast.

Frequently asked questions about the Right Angle Cross of Laws

Do all four Crosses of Laws have the Channel of Mutation?

Yes, the 3 and the 60 appear in each of them. What separates the four versions is the gate placed at the Personality Sun and what it brings: here the 60, which makes each change start from an accepted halt.

Is the limit the 60 accepts a rule to be followed?

No. The gate welcomes a real halt without fighting it and keeps the momentum for the restart; it describes no submission to a rule.

Who decides when a pause ends?

A request coming from outside, and the response the chart’s authority gives it. Nothing in Gate 60 sets the date of a restart: it waits for whatever will come to fetch it.

Should the impatience of those close to you set the pace of restarts?

Nothing calls for it: the worry of those around is not a request; the 60, for its part, does not wear itself out by waiting. The Right Angle of this version, meanwhile, is described as a personal destiny.
