A way of doing things is recognized before it is explained; a mind then works at putting it into a formula. What was done by instinct ends up being said, then set down as a rule for the people who live or work around the person, at the risk of being written too soon.

A single gate in a motor

Only one gate of the cross sits in a motor center: Gate 49, Principles, in the Solar Plexus. The rules it lays down therefore follow a wave; announced at the top of a mood, a rule can seem excessive at the bottom, even though its content has not changed.

The 49 defines this center only together with its harmonic gate, Gate 19, Wanting. If their channel, the 19-49, Channel of Synthesis, were the only one in the chart, the Type would be Projector, with Emotional Authority.

The profile places this version in the Left Angle: transpersonal karma, according to Human Design. To reach their goal, a person of this angle needs other people.

A fold the recipe does not mention

In the photos tourists post, the house galettes are recognizable before the sign: the edge is folded into a square, when the whole street folds it round. Bertrand has run this creperie in Quimper for twenty years and has never changed the fold.

In the spring, a guidebook publisher asked him for his method in ten lines. He spent an evening writing it: heat of the griddle, resting time for the batter, exact moment of the fold. His second-in-command followed it to the letter. The galettes were good; no regular would have recognized them in a photo.

On his team, he has only ever imposed one principle, announced on the first day of each season: the staff meal is eaten sitting down, all together, before the first customer. A seasonal worker protested. The principle held. The following summer, she was the one explaining it to the new hires.

From gesture to instruction

What was done without words can pass to someone else. The 4, at the Design Sun, draws from a way of doing things instructions that a second-in-command can follow when the author is away; they do not pass everything on, but enough to keep a workshop running. The direction of the 2 stays outside any instruction.

The principles of the 49 complete this handover. Settled once the wave has subsided, they teach those who share the person’s daily life what they take for granted and what they refuse.

A way of doing things frozen into procedure

The risk with the 4 is delivering a formula before the way of doing things has finished finding itself. Written too soon, the instruction hardens into procedure, clear and yet beside what it meant to pass on. Its author then defends it so as not to go back on their word.

When the Solar Plexus stays open, the mood of a room enters the person and comes out stronger. The rule the 49 announces that evening may be nothing more than a partner’s irritation, amplified, delivered with the firmness of a principle.

Once written, the method does not put itself into practice: the 4, in the Ajna, supplies no force to act on what it formulates. Without a motor elsewhere in the chart to carry it, the instruction can wait a long time in a binder.

For you, for others

For you

Show your gesture to someone before putting it into words, then compare what they took from it with what you were planning to write. What is missing from the written version may be what is most like you.

For others

If your team leader has this cross, talk over the rules he announces in the heat of the moment the next day, once things are calm; as for his way of doing things, watch it at his side instead of asking him to put it in writing.

Frequently asked questions about the Left Angle Cross of Defiance

Why put down in black and white what already worked?

To let others use it without the person. The risk is writing before checking that the rule holds.

How does the Cross of Defiance differ in its Gate 2 version?

In what comes first. Here, it is a way of doing things, which the formula then tries to make transmissible. In the Gate 2 version, it is a direction held without explanation; the way of doing things only comes after it.

Who does the 49 set its rules for?

For those who live or work with the person: the rules give them a shared framework. The principles of the 49 do not claim to govern the conduct of strangers.

Can a way of doing things be passed on?

In part. The 4 draws instructions from it that someone else can follow; what makes the person recognizable belongs to Gate 1 and does not fit entirely into an instruction.
