A “nobody pays alone here” thrown out when the bill arrives, followed by a short silence, and the group of friends knows where it stands. The principles in question set what is and isn’t done among people who are close. How firm they are varies with the mood of whoever holds them.

A need on one side, a rule on the other

The principles of Gate 49 are made to be announced to those they concern, a team or a group of friends. They arise in the Solar Plexus, the center of the emotional wave, of desire and of sensitivity to others, and so they pass through a mood: defended passionately on a Friday night, the same principle can seem rigid once the wave has come down.

The needs they answer come from Gate 19, Wanting, housed in the Root, where the body’s pressure makes them urgent. It is the Channel of Synthesis, 19-49, that joins the two gates: each need meets a rule there that says what is fair to grant.

On its own, Gate 49 defines no center. The 6-59, which connects the Solar Plexus to the Sacral, can however define this center without it: the principles of Gate 49 then follow that particular wave, with no needs from Gate 19 to arbitrate.

A rule already in place

At the handball club, Grégoire coaches the under-thirteens. One Saturday, a father demands that his son play the whole match. Grégoire replies that every child plays the same amount of time; the exchange ends there. He consulted no one: the rule existed before the question.

In a housing cooperative, Noémie drafts the charter for the shared spaces. She lets the text sit for three evenings before sending it and removes two articles written just after an argument with a neighbor. The ones that remain are adopted at the next meeting without a single objection.

A framework everyone can name

Laid down by someone with Gate 49, principles give a group reference points that can be said out loud: who pays for what, who is entitled to what, what is not done. Settled once the wave has passed, they rest on a stable conviction. Those who must follow them don’t have to guess the mood of the day.

When Gate 19 forms the channel with it, these rules are cut to fit the real needs of others, who then recognize them as their own instead of having them imposed.

The rule dictated by mood

One Sunday evening, still annoyed by an unpaid membership fee, Grégoire tells the parents that a child who misses practice will no longer play on Saturday. His chart has Emotional Authority. Made at the peak of his anger, the rule doesn’t last until Wednesday: he has to withdraw it in front of the people he had imposed it on.

Inaya, a Projector, wrote a set of internal rules for her association that nobody had asked her for. The principles in it are fair and calmly considered; yet they remain a dead letter, for lack of an invitation to put them into words. The bitterness she is left with, typical of a Projector who has stepped outside their Strategy, gradually draws her away from the board.

For you, for others

For you

Keep any rule you want to lay down for a group as a draft, long enough to reread it in another mood. When your Solar Plexus is open, ask yourself at the moment of giving in whether you are changing your mind or just want the tension to stop.

For others

When a friend with Gate 49 states a rule, discuss it the next day, calmly, not in the moment it lands. In the heat of the moment, the exchange is about everyone’s mood; once things have cooled, it is about the rule itself, which he can then adjust without losing face.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 49: Principles

Are the Principles of Gate 49 the same as the Values of Gate 50?

No. Gate 49 belongs to the Solar Plexus: its principles pass through the wave and become clearer with time. Gate 50, Values, a gate of the Spleen Center, reacts on the spot instead. One ripens a rule, the other decides in the instant.

Does a rule from Gate 49 change with mood?

Its weight changes, its content not necessarily. Laid down at a low point, a rule tends to harden and to punish; reread on a lighter day, it shows what it was worth. One that keeps the same meaning from one mood to the next can be announced.

Who are the principles of Gate 49 meant for?

For a close-knit group, to whom they say what is and isn’t done. With Gate 19 in the chart, they answer specific needs, the ones the Root makes urgent, and each rule starts from something someone close is asking for.

Can a principle of Gate 49 evolve?

Yes, when the needs it served have changed. The opposite trap is adding rules without ever removing any.
