Words and gestures arrive while the situation is there, neither before nor after. Speech comes out in the present; what it contains depends on what feeds it.
The timing of speech
The Throat carries outward what the chart contains, in words or in actions. Its Gate 20, The Now, adds a time constraint: the sentence or the gesture comes out while the situation is happening, not once it has passed.
What is said doesn’t come from the gate. It sets the moment; the content comes from the defined centers its channels link to the Throat.
Like Gates 10, 34 and 57, and only those, it has three possible partners, each in a different center. Joined by Gate 10, Behavior of the Self, from the G Center, it makes the Channel of Awakening, the 10-20: a way of being passes into the speech of the moment. With Gate 34, Power, from the Sacral, it forms the 20-34, the Channel of Charisma, where working energy turns into immediate action. With Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity, from the Spleen Center, it forms the 20-57, the Channel of the Brainwave, where a perception of the moment becomes a sentence.
Gathered around it, its partners also connect with each other: Gates 10 and 34 make the 10-34, Gates 10 and 57 the 10-57, Gates 34 and 57 the 34-57. With all four gates, the chart has the six possible channels between them.
In the moment
One Tuesday evening, the dining room of a small restaurant fills up all at once. The chef announces out loud a change to the menu, two dishes taken off, one added; the kitchen team follows. The decision was made and spoken in the same movement.
In the car, a little girl asks her mother why her best friend didn’t invite her to her birthday party. The mother answers right away, in simple words.
The same mother, asked to write a speech for her father’s eightieth birthday, spends three evenings in front of a blank page. When the day comes, she leaves her notes on the table and speaks.
What the speech contains changes depending on the channel formed. The moment stays the same: the one when the situation arises.
Being there when it happens
A question finds its answer while it is still open. Where others put theirs off until the next day, Gate 20 gives it while the situation is happening, in time to be useful.
Its present serves all the better when the chart gives it something to say: linked by one of its channels to another defined center, it gives an immediate voice to what comes from that center.
Talking to fill the moment
The slightest gap in the conversation becomes an occasion to speak. When the Throat is open, Gate 20 pushes to fill it in order to be noticed: the present serves as a pretext, and the sentence comes out before it has anything to carry.
An immediate answer isn’t necessarily heard. Offered unprompted in a meeting by a Projector, with the 10-20 or the 20-57 alone for example, it misses the mark, and then comes bitterness: their opinion only carries weight if someone asked for it.
The other pitfall has to do with preparation. A presentation announced a month in advance pushes you to rehearse a text the moment itself will make unnecessary.

With two of Gate 20’s partners in the chart, does the Type change?
It depends. As soon as Gate 34 is there with Gate 20 and another partner, the Sacral connects to the Throat: on their own, these gates make a Manifesting Generator with Sacral Authority. Gates 10 and 57 connect no motor: the chart remains a Projector’s, with Splenic Authority.
Does Gate 20 say what to do?
It says when more than what. The content comes from the center a channel links it to; Gate 20 expresses it at the very moment the situation calls for it.
Does living in the present prevent planning ahead?
Gate 20 concerns expression in the moment, without saying anything about one’s relationship to the future. A person who has it can plan like anyone else; the gate only describes the timing of speech and action.
Why does Gate 20 have three partners?
It belongs to three channels, each toward a different center: depending on the partner, its immediate speech expresses a way of being, an energy or a perception.
