Chart authorityEmotional, Sacral or Splenic
Two sentences in, the saleswoman knows which customer will leave empty-handed: their story reminds her of another one she has already seen play out. She changes her pitch before she has even thought about it.
A motor that listens to instinct
Gate 26, Egoist, belongs to the Heart Center (Ego): it knows how to sell an idea or a self-image. Gate 44, Alertness, sits in the Spleen Center and gives a nose for patterns already seen.
The Heart is a motor; the Spleen Center, seat of instinct, is not. In the order of authorities, though, the Spleen comes before the Heart. A chart reduced to this channel thus gives a Projector whose decisions belong to the Spleen Center, with a defined Heart that isn’t in charge. The Type changes, for example, when the 16-48 connects the Spleen Center to the Throat: the Heart’s willpower then reaches the Throat through the Spleen. The 21-45, which joins the Heart directly to the Throat, has the same effect. In both cases, the chart becomes a Manifestor’s, still with Splenic Authority; a Solar Plexus or Sacral defined elsewhere would take over as Authority.
The 26-44 belongs to the Tribal group, like the 21-45 and the 37-40, the two other tribal channels that start from the Heart. Its name is the Channel of Surrender.
The past as a compass
A recruiter reads a flawless résumé and feels a slight recoil. The way the candidate presents his last departure reminds him of someone, hired years earlier, whom the team came to regret. He couldn’t argue the point. In a chart where the Spleen Center decides, this recoil is the answer: if the recruiter overrides it, the unease will be gone by the next interview.
The Heart supplies the confidence to defend what instinct has approved. In front of a client, the same person quickly finds the words that make people buy. As long as the sale follows the first signal, all is well. The trouble starts when this persuasive power is used to defend something the Spleen Center had already turned down.
The right case, well defended
When it works in order, instinct first and willpower second, this channel gives a persuasiveness that doesn’t run on empty.
Gate 44 spots what has worked before or ended badly; Gate 26 knows how to say it so that it’s heard.
In a shop, an agency or a boardroom, this combination saves everyone time. The bad deal is dropped before it has cost a meeting; the good one is presented in its best light.
Willpower against instinct
Willpower can crush instinct. A saleswoman has committed to a quarterly target. A dubious client comes along; she senses it, signs anyway, because the numbers have to be met. The Spleen Center had spoken softly; the Heart spoke louder.
Gate 44 has its flip side. A pattern that ended badly can get pasted onto a new situation that only resembles it on the surface. The Spleen Center is also the seat of old fears. One of them can then pass itself off as instinct, to the point of dismissing a good opportunity over a mere resemblance.
The defined Heart knows the trap of overpromising. Selling an idea with talent creates commitments, and each one draws on a willpower that is real but limited.
In a Projector’s chart, persuasion deployed without an invitation adds its own fatigue. Convincing people who hadn’t asked for anything wears the person down and leaves bitterness, however good the argument.
For you, for others
For you
Your first recoil in front of a proposal counts for more than the case you’ll build afterward. Take it seriously, then put your persuasive power at the service of whatever has passed that first filter.
For others
A deal turned down without explanation deserves to stay turned down. Demanding reasons pushes the person close to you to manufacture some, and those will weigh less than their first recoil.
Frequently asked questions about the Channel of Surrender
Is the name “Egoist” a criticism?
It refers to a Heart that looks after its own worth and knows how to put it forward. What it sells, and to whom, depends on the person: nothing stops that worth from serving others, and Gate 44 helps precisely to tell the sound deal from the bad one.
How do you tell instinct from an old fear?
The system places the Spleen Center’s signal in the present: this deal, this person, at the moment they come along. A fear turned toward the future, which grows the more you think about it, is more a matter of anxiety. The instinct of Gate 44, for its part, compares one situation with another already seen, hence the risk of a surface resemblance.
What should you do with a commitment made against your first recoil?
Renegotiate it when possible. The system counts renegotiating a promise among the healthy uses of the Heart, whether defined or open. Keeping at all costs a commitment the Spleen Center had refused uses up a willpower that has its limits, without making the deal any sounder.
With Gate 44 alone, is the instinct there?
Yes. The system attaches this instinct to the gate itself. Without Gate 26, its only partner, Gate 44 doesn’t form a channel; the Spleen Center is defined only if one of its other channels is.
