What is numerology?

Numerology turns a name and a date of birth into a handful of numbers, then reads those numbers as character traits. On Soulencia, it follows the Pythagorean method, the most common one in the West: each letter of the alphabet is worth a digit from 1 to 9, and each total is reduced until it lands on a single digit, or on a Master Number. Here it is a tool for knowing yourself. Not for predicting.

Five numbers, two sources

Your date of birth gives two numbers. The Life Path, drawn from the full date, describes the main theme, with its gifts and its challenges. The Birthday Number, drawn from the day of the month alone, points to a specific talent.

The other three come from your first, middle and last names at birth. The Expression Number adds up every letter and speaks of your way of doing things. The Soul Urge keeps only the vowels: it touches on needs you do not necessarily express in public. The Personality Number keeps the consonants and describes the impression left on the people who meet you, often before they really know you. Two people born on the same day therefore share the same Life Path and the same Birthday Number; their other three numbers depend on their name.

The Master Numbers: 11, 22 and 33

Three totals escape reduction: 11, 22 and 33. When a calculation lands on one of them, at any step, the calculator stops there. An 11 is therefore not read as a 2, nor a 22 as a 4. Each Master Number has its own profiles, separate from those of the single digit it could have been brought down to. A few concrete cases: a birth on the 11th, the 22nd or the 29th gives a Birthday Number that is a Master Number, and a name whose letters add up to 29, 38 or 83 gives an Expression Number 11.

What the calculator gives, what the profile contains

The calculator on this page is free. It gives you your five numbers in one go. Your Life Path is shown in full, with its title, its description, its gifts and its challenges; the other four numbers appear with their title. Each number then has its own profile, a longer one, which adds the shadow, that is, what happens when its traits turn against themselves, and a set of frequently asked questions.

How your numbers are calculated

Soulencia’s numerology calculation, Life Path included, comes down to three rules: a table of values for the letters, a reduction to a single digit, and Master Numbers that are never reduced. The rest is addition, and you can redo all of it by hand.

The Pythagorean letter chart

Letters are counted in series of nine. A is worth 1, B is worth 2, up to I, which is worth 9; then J starts again at 1, up to R, which is worth 9; then S starts again at 1, up to Z, which is worth 8. Accents are removed before the calculation: an é counts as an e, a ç as a c. Ligatures are split, œ becomes oe and æ becomes ae. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes do not count. Only letters go into the sum. The first name Camille, for example, reads C 3, A 1, M 4, I 9, L 3, L 3, E 5, for a total of 28; Jean-Luc and Jeanluc give exactly the same total.

Calculating your Life Path

For the Life Path, the month, the day and the year are each reduced separately, then their three results are added together and reduced one last time. Take January 19, 1986. January gives 1. The day, 19, gives 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. The year gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6. In total, 1 + 1 + 6 = 8: a Life Path 8.

The Birthday Number is simpler: you reduce the day of the month, nothing else. A 19 gives 1, a 29 gives 11, a 22 stays 22. Since no day goes past 31, the Birthday Number can never be 33.

The name: all the letters, the vowels, the consonants

The Expression Number adds up every letter of your first, middle and last names at birth. The Soul Urge takes only the vowels, the Personality Number only the consonants, so that these two sums, added to each other, give back the Expression total.

An example with Camille Marie Dupont. All the letters come to 83, and 8 + 3 = 11: a Master Number, kept as it is. The vowels come to 39, then 12, then 3. The consonants come to 44, so 8.

One detail changes some results: the Y. Here, it always counts as a vowel, following Lynn Buess’s convention. Another school treats it as a vowel only when it sounds like one in the word. A name with a Y can therefore give a different Soul Urge and Personality from one site to another, without either calculation being wrong.

The profiles of the five numbers

Each type of number has twelve profiles, from 1 to 9, then 11, 22 and 33; the Birthday Number has eleven, because no day of the month gives 33. You can read them without doing the calculation, for yourself as well as for someone close to you whose numbers you know.

Frequently asked questions about numerology

Which numerology system does this calculator use?

The Pythagorean system, the most widely practiced in the West. Letters are worth 1 to 9, totals are reduced to a single digit, and the Master Numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept at every step.

Should I use my nickname, the name I go by, or my birth name?

Your full birth name, all first and middle names included, as it appears on your birth certificate. The calculator adds up the letters it is given: a nickname or the name you go by changes the sums, and so the Expression, the Soul Urge and the Personality. The Life Path and the Birthday Number depend only on the date.

What are Master Numbers in numerology?

They are 11, 22 and 33, the three totals that are never reduced. A Life Path 11 is read as an 11, not as a 2, and it has its own profile.

Why does another site give a different Life Path?

Often, it adds up all the digits of the date in one go. For November 1, 1979, that method gives 29, then 11. By first reducing the month (11, kept), the day (1) and the year (26, then 8), you get 20, then 2. Soulencia follows this second method, the one used in the Pythagorean tradition.

Is Y a vowel or a consonant?

Here, always a vowel. It is a choice between two recognized conventions, not an oversight, and it only affects the Soul Urge and the Personality Number of names that contain a Y.

Do I need to know my time of birth?

No. Numerology asks for only two things: your date of birth, for the Life Path and the Birthday Number, and your full birth name, for the other three numbers. The time and place of birth change nothing in the calculation.

How does numerology connect with the other systems?

On this page, it is read on its own. Soulencia’s Crossed Portrait sets it alongside Human Design, the Dreamspell and astrology, in a single synthesis.
