A riddle kept open for years, and the exact word for what is already known: the two do not come apart. A quiet constancy keeps alive whatever has been judged sound, without fanfare.

Two gates waiting for the Ajna

Gate 61, Mystery, sits in the Head; Gate 62, Detail, in the Throat. Between these two centers lies the Ajna, which the cross does not reach.

Gate 24, Rationalization, sits there; it would form a channel with the 61. Without it, the question does not take the shape of a thought and goes around in circles without finding words. Together, the 24 and the 61 form the Channel of Awareness, which links the Head to the Ajna. If it were the only channel in the chart, it would place the person among Projectors with Mental Authority.

The Right Angle is said to be a personal destiny; this version opens onto a question: the one the 61 keeps open without demanding an answer.

The swallows under the awning

Philémon, a retired mail carrier, has been writing down for fifteen years the day the swallows return under his awning: April 3, March 29, never the same date twice. His notebook has twice been of use to the regional bird society.

What he would like to understand is how a bird weighing twenty grams finds an awning again after a winter in Africa. He has read what people say about it; the question remains whole. It is what gets him outside every morning in April.

He kept the notebook when he gave up counting sparrows, which no longer taught him anything. This one goes on, one page per spring.

A question facts do not exhaust

The 61 keeps a question with no way out awake; the 62 brings it facts named one by one, which can be checked. The facts do not exhaust the riddle, and the riddle does not excuse anyone from the facts.

Gate 32, Continuity, holds on to what needs to last, and Gate 42, Growth, carries it through to maturity. A long-haul curiosity finds here what it needs to last, season after season, as long as instinct judges it sound.

What the riddle does not do

An open Head picks up other people’s questions. A neighbor’s worry about his retirement can take the place of the riddle and fill the nights without owing anything to the 61.

A riddle settles nothing. Signing up for three years of study because bird migration is intriguing can look like a decision; that decision still belongs to the chart’s authority, and the question will remain whole, studies or no studies.

The 62 can also pass off figures as an answer. Fifteen return dates noted to the day give the look of an explanation; they say nothing about how a bird finds an awning again.

For you, for others

For you

Let your question keep you company without asking it to decide for you. For everything else, trust your authority; your records can go on as long as they teach you something.

For others

When a relative with this cross brings up what has intrigued them for years, ask them a question instead of offering an explanation: they care about the riddle more than its solution.

Frequently asked questions about the Right Angle Cross of Maya

Does the 61 need an answer?

No. The interest lies in the question itself, which can stay open for a whole life. An idea may come of it, a piece of research or a notebook of records; the solution is not required.

What does the 62 do with a question that has no answer?

It does not answer it. It gathers around it what can be checked: dates, distances, names. The riddle keeps its core; the facts trace its outline.

What does the constancy of this version rest on?

On Gates 32 and 42. The 42 carries through to maturity what the gut has accepted; the 32 says, each time the question comes up, whether it is still sound. The curiosity of the 61 finds there a staying power it does not supply itself.

Does the 61 choose a field?

None in particular. What draws it is whatever remains unexplained, whether a bird’s navigation, a family story or a question of faith.
