A push far from the Throat
Gates 39 and 38 belong to the Root, a motor center. No channel connects the Root directly to the Throat: for their pressure to reach speech and bear on the Type, another defined center has to be on the path, the Spleen Center, the Sacral or the Solar Plexus. The Left Angle, for its part, points to transpersonal karma. It concerns people whose life plays out through their encounters with others.
The hall that echoes
Killian runs the sound in a municipal concert hall. At sound check, a band asks him what is off in their mix; he points to the bass from the first verse, and only finds the explanation, an amp facing the wall, when he walks down into the hall.
The back of the hall throws back an echo no one has ever managed to fix. For a whole season, he tries panels, curtains, diffusion angles; each failed attempt gives him a reason to start again the next day.
At the end-of-season review, he laughingly suggests to the director that the bands play in the parking lot, “where it’ll echo less.” The room laughs, then votes the funding for the acoustic panels.
Say it, then hold on
A fair criticism only has an effect if it is voiced and followed through. The 18 sees where things snag; the 39 dares to say it while the subject is open, even if that means going through a joke; the 38 keeps the remark from having no follow-up.
The Earth in the 17 brings, after the fact, the steps that make the criticism verifiable. A group that had doubts can follow the reasoning point by point.
The flaw pointed out in front of witnesses
The 39 can give a fair remark a form that crushes whoever receives it. Corrected in the middle of sound check in front of a whole band, the house technician only remembered being caught out in front of the others.
Pushed by the Root, the 38 can cling to a quarrel with nothing at stake. The sound check schedule turns into a month of tense messages with the neighboring control booth, simply because resistance revives the push.
Demanding a reason before acting loses the first signal. Killian now turns a setting down without waiting, and only defends his move once he has found the explanation.
