A flaw spotted by instinct, then an opinion built on facts pieced together: the criticism can hold its own. The Root adds two pushes, the nerve that gets it heard and the stubbornness that keeps it alive when it meets resistance.
Two pressures, no harmonic gate
None of the four gates finds its harmonic gate here: what is defined is settled in the rest of the chart. The 38, the Fighter, and the 39, the Provocateur, both sit in the Root, though, one to hold on, the other to provoke a reaction, without being able to define this center between them.
That leaves the angle: transpersonal karma, since this version is Left Angle; the person does not reach their purpose without others.
The bet on the old plans
Judith reviews building permit applications for a small town. Over two years, she has pieced together the appeals sent to her: almost all come from the same streets, the ones whose old plans cannot be found. She has drawn a conclusion from this that she can retrace file by file: without the old plans, every refusal is open to dispute.
In September, she tells the town clerk, half seriously: “I bet we’ll never get the old plans scanned before the election.” Stung, he books the county scanner the very next day.
The scanner rejects the large formats, then the folded sheets; the software loses the files twice.
Judith redoes each plan by hand, one Tuesday after another, until the last box, in the spring.
Opening a file and finishing it
A criticism that does not fizzle out: that is what the cross brings together.
The 18 sees where an organization snags, the 17 connects scattered facts into a conclusion that can be retraced.
The two Root gates give this opinion what is missing from the ones left in a drawer. The 39 gets moving what had stagnated, with a question, a joke, a challenge thrown out at the right moment; the 38 feeds on the resistance it meets and stays on the file when others have lost interest.
A pressure looking for a way out
The pressure of the Root does not always choose its target. A challenge thrown out to shake up a coworker who had no reason to move puts his back up instead of drawing him in; Judith experienced this with the front desk clerk, who now only passes her files on at the last minute.
The 38 holds on to a project until the last box; it does not choose which ones deserve to be opened. For a Generator whose Sacral has not responded, a bet made on a whim commits months of work that end in frustration.

Where does the sharpness of a remark come from when the opinion is already mature?
From the Root. The opinion forms in the Ajna, through the 17, step by step; the push that brings it out belongs to the 39. A settled conclusion can therefore come out in a sharper form than its content called for.
Does Gate 38 let a debate end?
Yes. What revives it is resistance; once the file is closed, nothing feeds it anymore. Opening a new front is decided elsewhere, by the chart’s Authority; the pressure of the Root has no say in it.
How does the opinion of the 17 reach speech?
Through Gate 62, Detail, the harmonic gate of the 17, which sits in the Throat. A chart that contains both forms the Channel of Acceptance (17-62), and the conclusion comes out with the facts that support it. Without the 62, the opinion of the 17 has no direct path to speech.
Does the 39 need the 55 to provoke?
Not to provoke. The 39 does so from the Root; its harmonic gate, Gate 55, Spirit, in the Solar Plexus, would form the 39-55 with it, the Channel of Emoting, and would add a mood in waves after each remark. Without it, the provocation has no such aftermath.
