What deserves to be kept is sometimes recognized before any reasoning: a team habit you refuse to see disappear, a supplier ruled out from the first call. The verdict comes before the arguments, which then have to catch up with it.
Values that come before words
The Spleen Center, where Gate 50 sits, warns in the very moment of what fits or threatens, without giving its reasons. The gate of Values works the same way: a value shows itself there as an instant recoil or agreement in the face of a situation, well before it can be stated as a rule.
The Channel of Preservation, numbered 27-50, connects it to Gate 27, Caring, one of the gates of the Sacral. On the Gate 50 side, this channel adds a pair of hands: the working energy supplied by Gate 27 is put at the service of what the gate judges worth protecting.
A refusal with no evidence
In the restaurant kitchen, Adrien lifts the lid of a crate delivered that morning and closes it again at once. The label is in order, and so is the date. He still refuses to serve that fish. The chef protests, then takes it off the evening menu.
At the parents’ association meeting, a proposal goes through quickly: cancel the end-of-year school trip to save money. Capucine votes against it without knowing why. The argument comes to her on the way home: for some of the children at the school, that trip is the only day of the year outside the neighborhood.
Capucine also has Gate 27. When she is asked, the following year, whether she would agree to organize the trip, her gut says yes before her head does. Soon she is booking the bus and counting picnic lunches.
A safeguard for the group
In a group, the person with Gate 50 senses on the spot that a decision damages what holds the whole together. This signal arrives before the debate, at a time when it is still possible to change course.
Their judgment comes all in one piece. It is useful when a quick decision is needed, when a new supplier or a new member arrives, where a long deliberation would cost more than the mistake it avoids.
With Gate 27, this judgment draws on the Sacral: commitments made to defend a value then hold over time, because the gut chose them.
The signal drowned out
The association’s board votes by show of hands for a new partner. Only one hand stays down, that of the treasurer, in whom Gate 50 reacted from the very first presentation. With no argument to set against the figures, she ends up going along with the general view. A year later, the partnership costs the association what she had perceived that evening without being able to put it into words.
A Projector, the treasurer has Splenic Authority: that recoil was her decision, and nothing obliged her to trade it for the group’s opinion. She waited for a reason to back up a signal that does not provide one, then let it get lost in the debate.
For you, for others
For you
Say your first “no” in the face of a collective decision, even with no argument to support it: the explanation will come later, or not. Go back over these refusals once the decision has had its effects, to see which ones were right.
For others
Let a friend with Gate 50 refuse without demanding the reason on the spot. With her, the refusal comes before the argument: asking for it too soon only gets you a justification made up for the occasion.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 50: Values
What is a value of Gate 50 based on?
On a reaction more than on reasoning. The gate is in the Spleen Center, which judges the present moment without explaining itself: a value first appears there as an agreement or a recoil. The words to defend it come afterward.
Should the values of Gate 50 be written into a group’s rules?
A set of rules freezes an answer given on a particular day, whereas the gate judges each situation as it arises. A charter written from its refusals can serve as the group’s memory, provided it stays open to revision and does not replace the signal of the day.
Can a value of Gate 50 be wrong?
It says what is healthy now; the Spleen Center does not look at the future. A refusal that is right today may no longer be right in a year. The question then deserves to be asked again, to hear the answer of the moment.
How can you tell a value of Gate 50 from a fear picked up from others?
By how long it lasts and what it is about. The recoil of Gate 50 targets the present situation, what it would damage in the group, and does not repeat itself. A fear picked up from others spills beyond the instant: it comes back, looks for reasons and pushes you to hold on to what feels safe. With an open Spleen Center, that fear can take on the look of a principle.
