The treasurer of the festival committee kept her word to the end: the stall set up, the accounts done, the hall left clean. That same evening, she turns down the closing drink and goes home alone, without anyone understanding why.

The Heart, effort and withdrawal

The Heart is the center of willpower, the kind that keeps a promise or defends one’s worth; it is one of the four motors of the BodyGraph. Each of its gates directs this willpower in its own way: Gate 21 insists on running its own affairs, Gate 51 measures itself against others.

Gate 40, Aloneness, turns it toward one’s own, in two stages. First the effort, given unstintingly to the people one loves; then the withdrawal, alone, long enough to recover strength. The name refers to this second stage, not to isolation.

In the Solar Plexus, Gate 37, Friendship, is its counterpart. With it, Gate 40 completes the Channel of Community, written 37-40 in the chart.

This channel connects two motors without reaching the Throat. Taken on its own, it makes the chart a Projector’s; another channel can change the Type, 27-50 toward a Generator, 12-22 toward a Manifestor, without ever moving the Authority, which stays Emotional.

Giving, then disappearing

Damien spends two weekends helping his sister move: the boxes, the rented van, the furniture to reassemble.

On Monday, he goes off walking alone all day, phone switched off. His sister worries. He has nothing against her; he needs this silence to get his willpower back.

His partner, at first, took it personally. He eventually saw the pattern: the greater the effort, the longer the withdrawal, and afterward Damien comes back available, ready to commit again.

He has also noticed that Damien promises nothing on days of great fatigue. His yeses come when his mood has settled; they hold.

Effort given in full

With this gate, you commit fully to your own, holding nothing back, because the withdrawal that will follow is part of the movement. The effort doesn’t have to be rationed; it is followed by time for yourself.

The Channel of Community, when Gate 37 is present, puts this willpower at the service of friendship: help that comes from a yes that has had time to ripen holds to the end.

When there is no withdrawal

Offering their services before anyone asks quickly wears a Projector out. They exhaust themselves for people who did not want that much, and bitterness, the signal of this Type, soon follows.

When Gate 37 completes the channel, the wave of the Solar Plexus also affects promises. One made at the high point of a warm evening commits the person at the next low, when the urge to help has fallen away.

Willpower itself has its limits. With a defined Heart, it comes back regularly but gets used up: a season in which everything was accepted leaves the person drained, sometimes resentful toward those they helped. With an open Heart, willpower is not available all the time; the person picks up that of the people around them, and a commitment made on this borrowed willpower may no longer hold once the others have gone.

A withdrawal that is never announced ends up isolating the person. After too many unexplained disappearances, those around stop counting on the person, or stop inviting them.

For you, for others

For you

Plan the time to withdraw at the same time as the commitment: a day given calls for an evening to yourself. Let the people close to you know in advance, so they don’t see it as rejection.

For others

Don’t chase after someone close who disappears after helping you: they will come back. Thank them once they are back, without asking why they slipped away.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 40: Aloneness

Is the Aloneness of Gate 40 a life choice?

Nothing suggests so. The name refers to the withdrawal that follows effort, a time to recover; it says nothing about lifestyle. A mother of three can have this gate and, despite the full house, carve out hours of her own.

Why does withdrawal follow effort?

Because the Heart’s willpower gets used up. Even when the Heart is defined and willpower comes back regularly, the effort made for others drains it; withdrawal replenishes it.

How can this time of withdrawal be protected?

By announcing it. Saying in advance “I won’t be reachable on Sunday” saves the people around from interpreting the silence, and the person from having to justify it afterward.

Does Gate 37 change anything about Aloneness?

It connects the Heart’s willpower to the wave of the Solar Plexus. The urge to help rises and falls with the mood; promises are better made once that wave has passed.
