A friend has gone quiet since a disagreement, and awkwardness settles in on both sides. Closeness has its seasons: it tightens, it loosens, and the mood of the moment weighs on it as much as promises do.

A closeness with its seasons

We readily picture friendship as a fixed state: you are friends, or you no longer are. Gate 37 describes it differently, as a closeness that has its seasons. Its center, the Solar Plexus, houses the emotions; the desire to reach out to someone and the discomfort of a quarrel live there too. The wave of this center colors relationships as much as moods; what matters here is the quality of a bond and how it varies, not the number of friends.

In the Heart, the seat of willpower, Gate 40, Aloneness, completes the picture. With it, Gate 37 forms 37-40, the Channel of Community, where friendship meets the effort given to one’s own and the withdrawal that follows it.

As the mood takes her

Every year, Armelle organizes the weekend away for her school friends. Some years, she calls everyone, finds the house and sorts out the details with obvious pleasure.

Other years, the same task weighs on her. Nothing has changed between them; she is at the low point of her wave. The group chat stays silent until the urge comes back.

With Julien, her oldest friend, a loan that was never properly repaid has left a chill. She does not dare bring it up again for fear the discussion will go badly; he is waiting for her to make the first move.

When the conversation finally happens, on an evening when she is in an even mood, it lasts ten minutes. The awkwardness had taken up more room than the disagreement.

The warmth of a bond

A friend drifting away, another waiting for a call, a chill that has set in without anyone mentioning it: the person with this gate notices, attentive to what goes on between people.

What they offer others varies with the mood. One evening, they get back in touch with everyone; another, they go quiet. The affection stays the same, though.

With Gate 40, friendship finds a willpower that keeps its word: help that is promised is given in full.

A friendship that has been through several moods rests on something more than a good time: each person has seen the other at the top and at the bottom.

Deciding in the heat of the moment

A friendship is hard to judge in the moment. In a chart with a defined Solar Plexus, the Authority is Emotional: breaking things off at the low point of an argument, or promising a trip together at the top, commits you to more than the mood of the moment allows.

The discomfort of conflict also pushes toward avoidance. So as not to damage the bond, the person keeps a disagreement to themselves; it returns later as distance, and that chill does more damage than the argument that was avoided.

For you, for others

For you

Let a night go by, or longer, before settling a question of friendship, whether it means making a promise or stepping back. A disagreement voiced calmly damages a bond less than a long silence.

For others

A friend with this gate may disappear for a while when their mood drops: don’t read it as a lack of interest. If they are slow to answer an invitation, a friendly nudge is better than a reproach.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 37: Friendship

Why does a friendship feel heavier on some days?

Gate 37 sits in the Solar Plexus, whose wave colors everything that passes through it, relationships included. The same friend, the same invitation can feel light at the top and heavy at the bottom, without anything having changed between the two people.

A friend disappears after helping a lot: is that cause for concern?

Not necessarily. If this friend has Gate 40, Aloneness, the system describes in them an effort given unstintingly to their own, then a time apart to recover their strength. Their silence follows the help; it does not take it back.

Does an argument mean the end of a friendship?

Nothing of the sort in what Human Design describes: a center that houses the discomfort of conflict, and a wave that makes a disagreement seem more serious at the bottom than at the top. Waiting for the mood to change lets you see the argument at its true size.

Can a friendship survive long silences?

The silences of this gate follow the wave and don’t necessarily say anything about the bond. Getting back in touch when the urge returns, without apologizing for having disappeared, is enough to rekindle the friendship.
