The mood shifts even though nothing in life has changed. Melancholy and cheerfulness follow their own movement, and loved ones search in vain for a cause.
A mood with no outside cause
Gate 39, The Provocateur, is part of the Root, a motor and pressure center, which fuels the Solar Plexus. Gate 55, Spirit, belongs to the Solar Plexus: Human Design makes it the image of a state that swings between melancholy and abundance, unconnected to circumstances. The channel’s subtitle, “A Design of Moodiness,” speaks of shifting moods.
Every chart containing the 39-55 has Emotional Authority, since the Solar Plexus comes first. The Type, though, depends on the rest, because the channel doesn’t bring either of its two motors to the Throat: with no other channel, it’s a Projector. With the 3-60, which defines the Sacral, the chart becomes a Generator’s; with the 35-36, which takes the Solar Plexus to the Throat, a Manifestor’s. Human Design places this channel in the Individual group.
Singing over the dishes
A musician wakes up with no desire for anything, on a rehearsal day. His partner spends the afternoon wondering what he did wrong, suggests going out, then falls silent. Two days later, the musician is singing while doing the dishes. Nobody said or settled anything in the meantime.
Through this channel, the Root passes its pressure on to the Solar Plexus. The wave moves forward with this push, without asking anyone’s opinion. Those around them watch it go by without being able to hold it back.
Decisions follow the rule of Emotional Authority. An answer given on the gray day and another given on the bright day are two moments of the same wave. Clarity comes when the answer no longer moves from one mood to the next.
In a Projector’s chart, waiting for an invitation comes on top of that. When a band comes to recruit the musician for a project, he still has to let his wave pass before saying yes. This slowness is part of his mechanics.
Knowing the wave from the inside
The channel gives access to the full range of the wave, from lows to highs. Someone who has learned that their lows pass no longer panics about them. This calm is contagious: a loved one in distress finds in them a person who doesn’t try to comfort them too quickly.
Mood, once recognized for what it is, becomes raw material. A song written in a low and revisited at a high doesn’t wear the same face; the musician can keep both.
Looking for someone to blame for melancholy
The first reflex is to look for a cause. Work, the relationship or the city then take the blame for a mood that had none; the person changes what didn’t need changing.
Deciding in the low is costly. The breakup message typed in the morning’s sadness closes a door that the mood two days later would have left open.
The people around them sometimes want to fix the mood. After hearing again and again that they need to snap out of it, the person learns to put on a cheerfulness they don’t feel, and afterward no longer quite knows where they are on the wave.
A partner whose Solar Plexus is open picks up this wave and amplifies it. They may take the day’s sadness for their own. The quarrel that follows has no real subject. Saying where you are on the wave, without justifying it, helps defuse it.

With this channel, the system describes a wave that follows its own rhythm, without waiting for an event. A reason may exist, but having none is nothing abnormal; observing over time reveals each person’s own rhythm.

Any except Reflector. On its own, it gives a Projector; with the 3-60 added, a Generator; with the 35-36 added, a Manifestor. Authority, though, stays Emotional in every case.
Can this channel be noticed from the outside?
Not necessarily. The name Emoting refers to the emotional wave the system describes, not to a way of showing it: a person with this channel can seem very calm while their mood rises and falls.
Can you decide anything at all in the low of the wave?
Small things, yes: for them, a night can be enough. What commits the future, a separation or a move, waits until the answer stays the same from one mood to the next.
