An invitation received on a Monday is a delight; the same one, received on Thursday, feels like too much, though nothing in the schedule has changed. The wish to welcome others rises and falls with mood.
A gate that opens with mood
Gate 22, Openness, sits in the Solar Plexus, a motor whose mood moves in waves. It turns this movement toward others: the wish to receive people and let them in follows the movement of mood more than the calendar.
Its partner, Gate 12, Caution, sits in the Throat, where it holds back its words as long as the moment isn’t right. Together the two make the Channel of Openness, numbered 12-22, which carries Gate 22’s very name: there, speech waits for Gate 22’s mood to let it through. Without Gate 12, Gate 22 defines no center and settles nothing there.
Two mornings at the lodge
Behind the front desk of a mountain lodge, no two mornings are alike. Some days, Mathilde knows every hiker’s first name, pulls out the map to show the best trail, keeps people chatting over coffee without anyone complaining.
Other mornings, she hands back the keys quickly and efficiently and barely smiles; guests leave without a chat. The regulars no longer take offense: they come back the following season.
There is no telling which of the two mornings will come. Her mood follows neither the weather nor the occupancy rate: it obeys an inner movement, like a tide the wind doesn’t command.
Her partner has gotten into the habit of asking her, before inviting friends over, whether the week is right for it. She can answer on the day itself, not always before.
A welcome that isn’t forced
When the wave is right for it, Gate 22 makes a person available in a way no politeness can imitate. Others know they are welcome, speak more freely, stay longer.
Once Gate 12 is present, this availability passes into the voice: a sentence saved for the right day reaches someone ready to hear it.
Open on demand
Some jobs require an even welcome. Hired for the winter at a gift shop, Gilles has to smile the same way from Monday to Saturday. On low days, he puts on a show of availability; in the evening, he has nothing left for his own family.
The impulse of a good day poses the opposite problem. One enthusiastic evening, Gilles invites a friend to move in with him until the friend finds a new place. With Emotional Authority, such a promise called for waiting until the answer held from one mood to the next.
The mood can also come from the guest. A neighbor arrives in an excellent mood; two hours later, her hostess has promised her a whole weekend at her country house. That cheerfulness wasn’t hers: an open Solar Plexus takes on the mood of the room and amplifies it, and the openness drops all at once when the door closes.
On a low evening, turning down an invitation without justifying yourself has a cost too. The person makes up an excuse, then another, and ends up fearing they will come across as distant, when one simple sentence would have been enough: “Not this week.”
For you, for others
For you
Let your invitations follow your mood, and say so: “not this week” is a complete answer. A promise that commits you deserves to be looked at on a high day and then on a low one.
For others
Invite a friend or relative with Gate 22 without insisting, and try another time if the answer is no: their refusal is about the day, not about you.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 22: Openness
What does the Channel of Openness keep from the gate that gives it its name?
Its name and part of its meaning. The gate describes an availability to others that follows mood; the channel, formed only when Gate 12, Caution, is there too, carries that mood into speech.
Should Gate 22’s changing mood be seen as a flaw?
No: Human Design sees it as the normal movement of an emotional wave, which follows its own course with no outside cause. The flaw would rather be deciding at the height of the rush or in the depths of the drop.
How can you tell whether a mood comes from yourself or from the people around you?
By stepping away. With an open Solar Plexus, the mood picked up fades once the person is alone; with a defined Solar Plexus, the wave keeps moving, whether the room is cheerful or not.
Does a low day mean you shouldn’t see anyone?
No. Gate 22 describes an availability that varies; knowing this lets you, when it can be arranged, save the appointments that demand the most of it for the days when it is there.
