A well-placed remark stirs up a frozen situation, and the stubbornness that follows keeps the subject from dying down. All of this plays out on a specific piece of ground, held closely, with an immediate sense of what is enough.

Shaking things up and lasting, one single push

Human Design associates the Right Angle, the angle of this version, with a personal destiny. In this cross, the Root and its pressure are shared by the 39 and the 38. The 39 has its harmonic gate in the Solar Plexus, Gate 55, Spirit. If the chart contains it, the two form the Channel of Emoting, where every provocation carries on into a wave of mood; this wave follows its own rhythm and says nothing about whether what was said was right.

The expansion joint

On a roadwork site, the same expansion joint has burst three times in one winter. Tiphaine, the crew leader, has written in big letters in the site logbook: “Do we patch it a fourth time just for fun, or is someone coming to take a look?”

The site manager came by the next day, laughed, then called in the engineering office.

The new process did not hold either. Tiphaine redid the joint in March, then in April, changing the order of the layers each time, until it made it through the summer.

The crew’s schedule has been hers since she arrived, and nobody redoes it behind her back. When compacting, she stops the roller after a few passes, without looking at the readings.

A matter stirred up, then followed through

A stuck situation finds someone to stir it up: the 39 puts into words, or into a joke, what everyone could see without saying.

What has been shaken up does not settle back afterward. The 38, at the Personality Earth, stays on the matter as long as it resists.

On the Design side, the 21 offers these two impulses a clearly marked-out ground, and the 48 a sense of measure taken in the moment.

One jab too many

The pressure of the Root sometimes takes any outlet. A jab thrown out to let off steam, when nothing calls for it, offends whoever receives it and opens no discussion; the stubbornness of the 38 may then defend it as if it had been intended.

The 21 holds its ground without anyone interfering, the 39 readily interferes with other people’s. The same person may demand to be left alone to do things and comment on the work of the team next door, and the people around are quick to point it out.

For you, for others

For you

Make your remark on the day the subject is being discussed, not because the pressure is rising. Once the question is asked, you will know how to follow it through: choose the ones you will still be defending a year from now.

For others

For a crew leader with this cross, a jab in a site logbook is a way of flagging a problem. Respond to the problem before discussing the manner. If she then stays on the matter for months, it is because the matter resists, not because she holds something against you.

Frequently asked questions about the Right Angle Cross of Tension

Are provoking and fighting the same gesture?

No, even if the pressure is shared. The 39 sparks a reaction; the 38 holds out against a resistance that is already there. In someone with this cross, one sometimes opens the conflict that the other then carries on.

Does a funny remark count for less than an objection?

Not when it targets a real point. The 39 provokes through humor as readily as through objection; what matters is the reaction it gets on that point, not the form it took.

Can a provocation be made in writing?

Yes. The 39 is looking for a reaction: a line in a logbook, a message or a poster get one just as well as spoken words. Writing has only one drawback: it stays, when the remark was meant for a moment.

Should an uncomfortable question be held back?

Not always. Timing matters: asked when the matter is being discussed, it gets things unstuck; thrown out with no occasion, it only relieves the Root. As for what comes next, the chart’s authority says which struggle deserves it.
