What is off is seen by instinct, then an opinion is built on facts pieced together. When it comes out, it does so with a frankness that provokes a reaction, and it holds firm as long as the objection has not been answered.
An eye that corrects, a possible wave
In this Juxtaposition, which Human Design describes as a fixed fate, the 17 and the 18 do not form a channel between them. With Gate 58, Vitality, elsewhere in the chart, the 18 would enter the Channel of Judgment, from the Root to the Spleen Center: the eye that spots the flaw would have behind it a pressure to live fully.
In the Solar Plexus sits the harmonic gate of the 39, Gate 55, Spirit. If this Channel of Emoting (39-55) is a chart’s only channel, the Type is Projector and the authority emotional: an opinion formed in the momentum of an evening would wait there for the end of the wave before committing to anything.
The neighbor’s car
A neighbor is torn between two used station wagons and calls Lambert, an auditor at a pension fund, as his friends do before every purchase of this kind. Lambert takes two evenings to answer: the known faults of each model, the year the engine changed, the price all this justifies. On Saturday, in front of the first station wagon, he crouches by the rear wheel and points to a trace of rust under the sill.
He then asks the seller, point-blank, how many owners the car has really had. The man laughs, takes out the service record and drops his price by eight hundred euros. The garage promises a new belt for the following week; Lambert calls back every Monday until the invoice arrives.
Steps, then momentum
The flaw spotted by the 18 and the reasoning the 17 unfolds form an opinion that can be checked point by point. With those who have seen earlier opinions confirmed, it carries weight without any need to insist.
On the Design side, the Root gives it an outlet and staying power. The 39 finds the question that unblocks a frozen situation; the 38 keeps it on the table as long as the problem persists.
A question ahead of the investigation
In a 4/1, line 1 needs to be sure of its foundations before speaking up; the 39 pushes to step in on the spot. The question can therefore go out while the reasoning is still under construction, and the person then blames themselves for speaking too soon.
A fair remark, addressed to someone who was not asking for anything, damages the relationship it meant to serve. The neighbor would not have liked hearing an opinion on his car if he had not asked for it.
The 38 can also keep an objection alive once the answer has been obtained. The belt is changed, the invoice paid; the person still calls back about a line item, as long as one point resists.
For you, for others
For you
Finish checking before you ask the question that is itching at you: it will arrive with its evidence.
For others
Before a major purchase, ask a friend with this cross for his opinion, then give him time to build it. If he comes back to the same objection several times, answer on the substance rather than changing the subject.
Frequently asked questions about the Juxtaposition Cross of Opinions
Is a sound opinion enough to convince?
Not when no one asked for it. The strength of the 17 lies elsewhere: its reasoning unfolds in steps, so a disagreement concerns one point instead of sweeping everything away.
Does an unanswered objection eventually fade away?
Not on its own with the 38, which finds in the obstacle a reason to stay. An answer on the substance takes away that support faster than a refusal.
With which gate would the 38 form a channel?
With Gate 28, the Game Player, in the Spleen Center. Together they would form the Channel of Struggle (28-38), where instinct says in the moment whether a fight is healthy. The 28 is not in the cross; without it, the tenacity of the 38 holds on without that input.
Why does an opinion from the 17 seem so certain?
Because it is born in the Ajna, where the mind puts facts in order; its conclusions take on an air of certainty there, right or not. This confidence proves nothing; what makes the opinion reliable is that each of its steps can be followed.
