An unanswered question can stay with someone for years, come back while reading an article or by the sea, and keep its pull intact. Here, what resists explanation draws a person in instead of worrying them.

A pressure that doesn’t push you to act

The Head, at the very top of the BodyGraph, puts the need to understand under pressure. It raises questions without supplying the slightest energy to follow them up. In this center, Gate 61, Mystery, directs the pressure toward the questions that remain once all the answers have been given.

Only one gate can answer it: Gate 24, Rationalization, in the Ajna. Together they form the Channel of Awareness, 24-61, where the mind takes up the question asked above and turns it over until it takes shape.

When Gate 24 is missing, no channel takes up the question. It doesn’t disappear, though, and keeps occupying the person without finding a form.

Questions with no end date

Léon is an electrician. In the evening, he reads articles about black holes that he only half understands. He comes back to them the next day without hoping to see any more clearly.

At her grandmother’s funeral, Apolline wonders what remains of a person when no one remembers them anymore. The question doesn’t sadden her. It follows her on the train home, fades, then resurfaces a year later in front of an old photo.

Neither of them is trying to reach a conclusion. The question matters in itself, like a room in the house you haven’t explored yet.

Keeping a riddle open

For someone with Gate 61, a question others have put away for lack of an answer stays alive, with no solution needed to keep finding it interesting.

The Head is also, according to the system, the place of inspiration, the idea that comes out of nowhere. With Gate 61, this idea is born from what remains unexplained, and it can open up a line of research or a book.

If the channel is complete, this idea finds in the Ajna, through Gate 24, a place to be worked on.

In a conversation, a riddle posed by someone with this gate can shift others out of their certainties, for a moment.

Sharing the riddle at the wrong time

Thrown into a conversation that wasn’t expecting them, the questions of Gate 61 fall flat. For a Projector, whose Strategy asks them to wait for the invitation, this awkward silence feeds bitterness, the signal of their Type.

Mystery decides nothing. A Generator who leaves his job because a question is calling him elsewhere, without his Sacral having responded to a concrete offer, ends up with a question and no work; frustration follows.

For you, for others

For you

Let your unanswered questions live: they ask nothing of you except that you return to them whenever they return. To decide, rely on your Authority; a fascinating riddle doesn’t tell you what to do tomorrow morning.

For others

The question that has occupied a friend for years isn’t waiting for your answer. Share yours if the subject speaks to you, without trying to close the debate: for him, it is the conversation that counts.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 61: Mystery

Does Mystery necessarily lead to spirituality?

The system describes an attraction to what escapes explanation, without naming a field. It can be physics, family history or faith; the gate doesn’t choose.

Is a question left unanswered a failure?

Not for Gate 61. Keeping a question open for years is part of how it works, and inspiration can be born from that waiting.

How do you recognize a Gate 61 question?

By its subject. It concerns what remains unexplained, not a problem to solve: why the world exists, what remains of a life, what no one has understood yet.

Can you have Gate 61 with an open Head?

Yes. The Head is only defined if one of its three channels is complete; otherwise, Gate 61 sits in an open Head, and its questions mingle with those this center picks up around it.
