A decision made in enthusiasm holds until the day the mood comes down. By then the experience is under way; it no longer looks quite like the urge that gave rise to it.
Desire and its wave
Crisis: the name makes people fear a gate that attracts difficulties. The system does not attribute that power to it. Gate 36 sits in the Solar Plexus, where desire follows a wave whose rhythm owes nothing to circumstances; the crisis names the moment when the urge that launched an experience falls away while the experience itself carries on.
Gate 35, Change, its partner, belongs to the Throat. Together they form the Channel of Transitoriness, numbered 35-36: in it, desire goes straight into speech or action, so an experience can begin at the top of the wave.
The low that follows is no verdict on the project. It is part of the same movement as the initial enthusiasm, and the gate describes getting through that low, not a failure.
The sailboat on blocks
Thomas and Leïla buy a secondhand sailboat one June evening, after a day at sea with friends. By November, the boat is up on blocks, the hull waiting to be sanded, and each Saturday at the boatyard weighs a little more than the last. Nothing has changed in the project; Thomas’s mood has.
In spring, the urge returns; the boat goes back in the water. Thomas now knows that the low did not signal the end of the project, only another moment of the same wave.
Getting through the low
Knowing your own wave changes how you live through a crisis. Someone who has learned that the low follows the high keeps the project instead of throwing it away, while waiting for the urge to return.
A decision that waited for the end of the wave holds up better in the low: it has already been looked at in both lights.
When Gate 35 is there too, desire finds an immediate outlet in speech and action; Gate 36 brings to these experiences what it knows about lows.
Deciding at the top
In any chart where the Solar Plexus is defined, the Authority is Emotional. A decision made at the top, on the strength of the urge alone, runs into the next low, and the Crisis comes as a surprise.
The low pushes toward the opposite mistake. Giving up at the lowest point, selling the boat in November, means deciding a second time at the wrong moment.
A Projector with Gate 36, whose Solar Plexus is defined by 30-41, is also waiting for an invitation. Launching into a new experience alone, without anyone having invited them, exposes them to bitterness when the low arrives.
Those around, for their part, may take the crisis for a failure. A partner who sees the other gloomy in the middle of a project suggests stopping everything: they are trying to fix a mood that will pass on its own.
For you, for others
For you
Is a project weighing on you at the low point of the wave? Decide nothing that day: set yourself another time to come back to it. What holds from one mood to the next deserves to be pursued; the rest can stop with no regrets.
For others
The low point of a project launched with enthusiasm is not the time to advise someone close to you to stop. Remind them instead of where they started from, and let the wave run its course.
Frequently asked questions about Gate 36: Crisis
Does the low of a crisis eventually pass?
According to the system, the wave keeps its own rhythm and eventually rises again. You see the project clearly on the day your opinion of it stays the same at the top and at the bottom; no calendar sets that day in advance.
Does a crisis imposed by events fall under this gate?
Not as Human Design describes it. A layoff or a breakup comes from outside; the Crisis of Gate 36 comes from a desire that falls away while nothing moves around it. The two can coincide without the gate having caused the event.
Once the crisis has passed, what more do you know about the project?
Its cost, on top of its appeal. A person who has been through the low without giving up knows what the experience asks of them; if the urge returns, they set off again knowing what they are getting into.
With an open Solar Plexus, does the crisis necessarily come from the person going through it?
Not always. An open Solar Plexus picks up the emotional climate of those around and amplifies it: the discouragement of a partner or a team can then pass for one’s own. Asking who was present when the crisis began helps sort out what belongs to whom.
