Before any analysis, something is off, and the person already knows where. The flaw points itself out, in a duty roster or a seating plan, without the person always being able to say what showed it to them.

A judgment of the moment

Gate 44, Alertness, recognizes a pattern it has already seen in a situation. Its neighbor in the Spleen Center, Gate 18, Correction, looks at the same situation and sees what could work better. The center judges the moment: it signals what is right or not, here, without giving its reasons or repeating its signal. Gate 18’s spotting is therefore a matter of instinct more than examination; the explanation, if it comes, arrives afterward.

Gate 58, Vitality, answers it from the Root. With it, Gate 18 forms the 18-58, the Channel of Judgment, and the Root supplies the pressure that carries the fix through to the end. As long as Gate 58 is missing, Gate 18 defines no center: both Type and Authority are decided elsewhere in the chart.

The lamp that was moved

In the rehearsal room, before she has even put down her bag, the stage manager moves a lamp stand twenty centimeters. The director asks Ophélie why. She has no idea; she only knows the old spot wasn’t right. At the dress rehearsal, the actor who used to trip in the shadows at that spot no longer trips.

A teenager is trying out a board game with his cousins. By the third round, he announces that one rule makes the game impossible to win for the last player. They check: he’s right. The correction he suggests is adopted for the following games.

In both cases, the flaw was seen before it was understood. The reason only came afterward, when someone asked for it; it added nothing to the first glance.

Making something better

A set of rules, a delivery route or a family recipe benefits from passing under this gaze, because it already exists and can be improved. Gate 18 doesn’t start from scratch. It starts from what is there and points to the place where it snags.

Its judgment has the quality of the Spleen Center: immediate, it holds for the present situation. A remark made at the moment the flaw appears keeps it from settling in. With Gate 58, the same alertness receives from the Root what it needs to see the repair through.

One fix too many

A correction no one asked for sounds like a reproach. A department manager reworks a colleague’s schedule and hands it back to her annotated; what she mainly takes away is that her work wasn’t good enough.

The same department manager, a Manifestor, redoes the whole team’s vacation chart one Sunday. On Monday, two colleagues discover their weeks have been moved and put the old chart back up; a note sent before he started would have given them time to discuss it, and spared him the anger that takes hold of him when he sees his repair undone.

The mind can also get ahead of the first signal. The Spleen Center doesn’t repeat it: set aside while thinking it over, it doesn’t come back; the person goes back over the whole file, not knowing what mattered at first glance.

For you, for others

For you

Hold on to the remark that comes to you for no reason, at first contact: that is the one that hits the mark. Then check that someone is waiting for it before you say it.

For others

When this person points out a flaw, ask them where exactly, without demanding to know why: they see the place right away; the reason may come later.

Frequently asked questions about Gate 18: Correction

Is Gate 18 looking for perfection?

The name speaks of correction, not perfection. Gate 18 spots what could work better in a given situation, at the moment it arises, without measuring things against an ideal.

Where does the certainty that something is off come from?

From the Spleen Center, which sends out an immediate signal, before any reasoning, without supplying its reasons. The person may look for an explanation after the fact; the judgment was already there.

Does having Gate 18 make you critical?

The gate makes you see the flaw; it doesn’t oblige you to comment on it. When to say it depends on the Strategy of the person’s Type: waiting to be asked for their view, responding to a request, or informing before touching something.

Can Gate 18 correct without Gate 58?

Yes. The spotting owes nothing to Gate 58: the flaw is seen just as fast, but the repair loses the backing of the Root’s pressure.
